Anyone have any recommendations of things to do/see/stay/ruin a few brain cells in these areas?
I'm off to Lake Balaton for a few days festy, then off to Budapest then need to get to another knees up near Zadar (cro) so anyone who knows anything about Hungarian / Croatian travel would be a life saver. Anyone who knows the dirtiest, nastiest, most unwholesome, unsavory places to go would be a best friend ;)
A few days to Kill between festivals but have no idea about these areas

The train from Budapest to Zagreb and then to Zadar would fit the bill.
Your aim should be to get to the island of Hvar though. Quality times to be had.

Cheers fella - I checked that but looking at Hungarian Rail it was disjointed and about 5 changes / 7 hours from Buda via Zag to Zadar. Do you know the Croatian rail details?
I'll be at this http://www.soundwavecroatia.com/… - so I think I'll be covered for good times - its actually in Petrcane so I think Hvar is a bit south for my treks this time

i'm from hungary, and i can tell, that all the good places are closed during the summer festival season. however you can check these:
http://www.a38.hu/
http://www.godorklub.hu/or if you want to drink (a lot) the check the world's best cocktail bar:
or if you want a coffee or just wanna chill, the visit the Raday str.:

and forget everything that tourist guides say, especially avoid the Vaci str.
- just drop a mail if you want more details. i really hope balaton sound will be great...mikabast

ahh! I will get monday eve to thurs day so a couple of days to check out the area. The girly comes from Hungary too but they moved to Sweden when she was a little one - so language is very good - knowledge of drinking dens is very poor!
Strange how it shuts during busy seasons!
transport is the bugging element at the moment.

keep in mind that after balaton sound, the trains will be extremely crowded, so if you can, just stay another day at the balaton.
oh, and buy the tickets online a few days/weeks before the festival, because last year every tickets have been sold out the day before the festival, so all the foreigners (who were sitting on the train at this time) had to stay...
- *i mean stay out...mikabast
- what's the weather like round the lake in July? we have a place to stay but I'll be taking a hammock and will be tempted to not make it back to the flat!! unless I'm going to frazzle in the morning and turn to ice in the evening.gpop
- last year it was 35+ in celsius, but huge summer storms are not raremikabast

Go to Hvar. Please do yourself a favour and just go. And don't take a girlfriend. I repeat, DO NOT TAKE A GIRLFRIEND.

I'll be in Petrcane, near Zadar - Differenz, do you happen to have any transport details? It's likely that I'll fly out of Zagreb or Split so will need to trek there some how.

Hey gpop - are you going to the Garden Festival in Petracane? I'm heading there with a group of 14 or so mates 3rd, 4th & 5th July. My girlfriend went last year and said it was amazing. I cant wait. We;ve got a week after to explore Croatia. Will be taking in the Krka National Park and Split. But was thinking of going to Brac. But looks like Hvar is the island to go to...

no, i was - but swapped it for Soundwave - its the festival in the same place as the Garden festival but 2 weeks after - organised by the same folk too :)
