As far as I know we need some new guy from Ohio (Edison) or Edinburgh (Bell) to spice up the economy. It doesn't work unless some great brain finds something really new out of the blue. This crisis (I think it's real) is about saturation from product, not banking mischief (although they are indeed criminals, and greedy fucks). So unless someone comes up with a very bright idea that changes everything, we're fucked.
- Both product saturation & banking mischief, but that's for the Politics thread...TheBlueOne
- people are not consuming any more.Corvo2
- actually, they are consuming more and moreraf
- shouldn't this go in a new economy thread?Amicus

Don't ask too many business-related questions, or somebody who doesn't know their ass from their elbow might come along and tell you to grow a pair—
Because heaven forbid that a person starting their first business venture should gather as much advice as they can.
I'm looking at you, kaonashi.

Corvo2, I think clients—nevermind design firms or agencies—are looking for people with a strategic sense. I don't think they care so much if you need to collaborate with, say, a web developer to make a site happen. This is what I'm finding, at least.
- For someone who is reasonably tech savvy, you don't really need a developer to do most things these daysukit
- You mean like opening a file in Flash? I do. I don't even have Flash. I know how to design w/in web standards, but Flash/programming... nowt.Scotch_Roman
- Yea - but what is a "strategic" sense, really - and all that stuff they put up on ads?Corvo2
- doesn't every designer or draughtsman have a "strategic" sense?Corvo2
- Not in my experience Witt. I know a lot of designers who can't grasp large-scale strategy.Scotch_Roman
- I know the term gets bludgeoned to death, though.Scotch_Roman
- ..so the meaning has become squeezed out of the word. But I think good strategy transcends marketese.Scotch_Roman
- So by large-scale you mean how a brand will transform itself and what design strategies will be used?Corvo2
- I think he means the ability to decide what should be done rather than just the ability to implement it.ukit
- like a logo that is able to evolve within certain design rules? That's nice.Corvo2
- No one said anything about an evolving logoukit
- Yes. Or what ukit said.Scotch_Roman
- @ukit - but that sounds more like management as not so much as design, or is the proactive side... unpaid?Corvo2
- as not = and notCorvo2
- For instance - I used to have a job where I'd go into big companies like MSFT and try to figure out what their business requirements were for a project. Then I'd turn those into interaction maps, wireframes and eventually visual design. That's an example of a design position that's more involved than just cranking about a comp.ukit

- It wasn't really a business position, but involved more thinking and planning than a regular design position.ukit
- I ask these questions because I once designed a strategy for a company, and I only charged the logo.Corvo2
- I'm sure you could apply the same level of research and planning to branding and identity work for instance.ukit
- because my brief for their logo and b-card was turned into business strategy.Corvo2
- I guess you can put as much effort into these things as you need to - Fortune 500 companies have big budgets for this kind of thing.ukit
- Stop it. We need sync.Corvo2
- LOL!Corvo2

Be a badass designer, follow around bands like Metallica, Rolling Stones, Phish (needs LOTs of people in the crowd and cult-like following) Make some bad ass posters, make them 24 x 36, screenprint them, charge $40 - make 500 of them - sell them out of a van in the parking lot - make $20,000
- That's actually a great idea. Wouldn't the band shut you down though?ukit
- not some of the "hippier" ones - dave mathews band, Phish, OAR... big crowds and devoted fans that have some cashidentity

Ok. Let's say designers need to do the "strategic thinking". What is left for the company owner to do then?
