Find person with IP

Let's say someone is sending disturbing and accusatory information to a business via their web site contact form. They can find an IP address for a viewer that accessed the site at the time the email was received.
This IP address resolves to an ISP. At this point, where do they go in researching it from there? They're really eager to figure out who is sending this information, and they know judging by the IP origination that it's not the same person.
Any ideas?

Most people have dynamic ip addresses .. so the ip address might change even if it is the same person. Only the ISP will be able to work out who's assigned to the IP address at the time the messages were sent.
I'd just keep a log of everything (messages / dates+times) together with the IP addresses... if they are actually breaking the law get in contact with the Police.
I suppose they might also be breaking the ISP's ToS - so you could contact them first of all maybe?

^Yeah what lukus said. You would have to work with their ISP (actually police would have to) and they would certainly be able to track it to a person if they are doing it from home. It could be somone doing from a local coffee shop or from a neighbors wireless, if so then it will be infinitely more difficult (if not impossible) to track such a person if this is the case.
You would have to have something substantial to get local enforcement involved though I am sure.
- There's other tracking tricks your Net Admin could use also if he's good enough.designbot

Thanks for the info. Can't talk much further about it, but I expect the company in question to pursue it pretty far.

Can you give us some more vague details? I'm really interested. This sounds like really really GREAT drama, and I need more of it.

I was under the impression that US internet services tended to give broadband users a fixed IP. I know in Europe we tend to have dynamic IPs.
Which reminds me, I need to set up a static IP on my connection here. Thanks!

In a nutshell, a client of mine received a really negative email through a contact form on their site that included a person's name, email address, etc. They didn't let me read the message.
We were able to track through server logs for access on that site page at the same time of day the message was received, and get an IP address. It only resolved to an ISP.
Well, they received something bad again last week, and want us to take it a bit further in terms of tracking down an individual. They're now interested in pursuing it much further, so it should be interesting to see what we find.

Negative or threatening? I can't see law enforcement giving a rat's behind if the message was:
"I really hated working for you, the projects you had me do sucked, and you were a terrible client. SECRETLY SIGNED, Someone you wish you still knew. P.S.: My left pointer finger smells like your bad breath; how I hated your bad breath!"
- I dont' know personally, they've not shared the messages with me.mg33

None of my business, but I would stay away from that sort of trouble. I understand the situation and why they turn to the web guy, but honestly I don't think that sort of stuff is part of your contract, assuming you just made some company their website and there is no other kind of relation between you and the firm.

Yah Corvo. That was mainly why I was asking. Because if it was "FUCK YOUR CURRENT PROJECT SCOPE" then obviously it could involve you and your company. But if it was just some generic negativity, then it's not your problem at all.
