My boss has recently been giving me (sr designer) less and less work to do. He has instead been giving it to a coworker (desktop publisher) with a smaller skill set. I still have a list of responsibilities that he relies on me for, but I have not had 40 hours of actual work to do in weeks. I approach him offering to take on more, but he has yet to reciprocate.
I have a theory that he is doing this because my coworker will do anything he asks and doesn't give feedback on his ideas for design. I, on the other hand, am more willing to be vocal if I have a suggestion that could improve our work.
Has anyone else experienced a situation like this? How did you respond and what was the outcome?

If your boss doesn't like you being vocal, then stop it. He's the boss and you have to adapt to him. If that is the reason why.

Sounds like he just wants a production monkey. Do you want to do that?

I hope your boss will not google your name

Sounds like you need to have a sit down. Avoiding this conversation is a bad idea. If you're up for a review soon, that's a good forum to have it. If not, set up a discussion of your own, soon.
You'll never be given what you want at a job, you need to take it. If you're not smart enough to try, you'll be given only enough to remain where you are until they replace you.

I bet it really sucks in Detroit now. Highest crime and unemployment rate. Now I see why housing is cheap over there.

I doubt he's going to fire you though.

Sounds like a job I had a couple of years back, I ended up spending 7.5 hours a day making up timesheet entries. Then I got made redundant, I guess the only surprise was how long it took.

What zenmasterfoo said,
If you are a senior designer it would mean you are experienced and capable of engaging your boss on an equal level. Be professional and talk to him about it, I would say that would be the respectful thing to do

Have a break
- Drink a bottle of champagne tonight
- Ask your girlfriend a blowjob
- Make a good sleep
- Tomorrow, tell your boss that you have talent and show it!

i was in charge of upto 32 people, and i was always commended on my man-management skills when appraised by senior management. but if i'm being honest, i think your boss is just testing you out, he's trying to see how you can rise
to this, i doubt he's in charge of that many people so i'd just have it out with him, man to man.
saying that, it'd be different it the boss was a chick and that, because you could just get fired in at the next studio piss-up, bit of smooth talking, and get in amongst her jackson flan, everything would be sorted.
