I'm going to have to go with maya. What I knew came flooding back. Modeling is super fast. Plus I can get it for $400.

bump for whomever gives a shit

You guys should try Blender. It's free, and it has alot of features.

Blender has the most retarded interface ever, this here choice is about easy interfaces. There are some smaller 3D programs with better interfaces than C4D, but C4D can model and animate most things that Maya can.
- It's worth giving it a chance.. the interface isn't similar to other programs but ...********
- it's actually been designed pretty logically. You simply need to learn it.. but it's totally worth it - blender is quite simply********
- AMAZING. It has a lot of features that highend 3d packages have - and it's free and it's in active development********

I like starting in nurbs then switching the geometry to polys. Too many packages today are missing nurbs. Max has them but they're slow and they suck. Lightwave has patches instead of them. C4D doesn't have true nurbs-just some subd thing called hypernurbs.
- subdivision surfaces are a good compromise - you get the low-weight of polygon modelling + the iterative levels of smoothness of NURBS..********

Blender works fine. You just need to read the tutorials and have a little patience. If the color scheme annoys you, you can change it as well.

Blender is great. Sure it is complex, but no 3D program is easy to use. All will take time to get good at. and...its free...and the tools are equal to Maya, Lightwave, etc....

even rotating the camera in blender is hard. it messes up the grid plane
- you need to switch from trackball mode (which is default) to mouse mode********

fyi to navigate the camera in c4d click and drag while holding 1, 2, or 3 down on the keyboard.

I played around with C4D for a few days and it's too basic. The whole program has like 20 buttons. I don't like how you have to implement subds. The modeling just isn't clean and it has a weird layering system. Dunno why people like it so much.

- dropping geometry into hypernurbs for subds is a pain?M_C_P

what are you trying to accomplish?
I agree that the modeling tools aren't as polished as maya or modo, but then again i think those packages are for different audiences. C4D appeals to me and other after effects people because of the pipeline connectivity to AE and the relative ease of use compared to other 3d apps.
i'd venture to say that most motion graphics users of after effects who need 3d in their toolkit find C4D suits their needs fine.

I'm not into AE so I'm not missing out on much. I'm using maya now. It's easier to use. more precise and has a shitload of tool that c4d doesn't have.
- I would disagree that Maya is easier to use than C4D but it does have more features.CyBrain

nah brah, maya is easier to use once you figure out the drop down menu. also the detail in which you can customize the navigation is great.
