I'm downloading the demo of MAXON CINEMA 4D R11 now. Lightwave frustrates the fuck out of me. Do you use C4D? how does it compare to other packages?
- CyBrain0
I tried learning Lightwave a while back it it was the hardest thing I ever tried to learn (maybe not compared to AS3) Maya is better and probably the best, most powerful all around, but you'd have to be making a career of it to be any good.
Cinema 4D is definitely the way to go if you're not strictly 3D. I got the Lynda.com tutorials and learned quickly and easily.

how do you pan the perspective camera?

that only zooms. I'm on a mac
- try the help menu nimrodairey
- What Peter H. recommended will work on a mac (1 + mouse will pan. 2+ mouse - push/pull)frediscrazy
- the demo doesn't have help asswipe********

I got it. It seems a little slow doing it that way

i think i love this program.

I've used alias studio/power animator, lightwave, softimage, and 3d studio max. This is by far the easiest to use. Things are done differently of course but that can be said for every package. It's just smooth. I'll probably buy this soon.

Depends how you're using it...

mainly for characters, text animation, and making cars

Maya is really intended for larger pipelines of artists, it's so vast. Cinema 4D is great for the solo or duo artist.

I've used maya but not for several years. I'm downloading it to play around with. It strange when you're actually buying the software...actually do research into it.

anybody using maya on mac? how do you use the track tool (camera pan)? the middle button doesn't work. I've tried to map keys to it but it doesn't seem to work.
- harlequino0
Been about a year and a half since I stopped using Maya, but I want to say try holding the Cmnd, Alt, and Control keys (separately) and then your various mouse buttons. Those control the track, pan, and orbit functions I believe.

nah it's mapped to the middle mouse button and command. problem is that maya doesn't recognize the middle button. I can't get the hotkey editor to work. fuuuuuu
- hmm, odd. Maybe it's been changed in the most recent ver.harlequino

nah I got it to work by mapping to a key but I can't assign it to a mouse button. I never had this problem on a pc.

I've used most of the 3D package, Lightwave, Maya, Electric Image, 3DS Max, Modo and now Cinema 4D. Maya was the hardest to learn. Between all of them I think that Cinema 4D is the easiest, I've been using it for the last 4/5 projects and I learn more and more every time, plus there are a lot of resources on-line.
So if I had to give you my opinion I'd go with C4D.

What about modo? The new version looks promising. Specially the price compared to C4D.
