it really depends on the shot you are tracking, for 3d tracking pftrack has done us well but we almost never need it. For 2d tracking we use ae for really basic, usually single point tracking (And eye ball the rest) or use mocha which works pretty damn well. what i find helpful especially for shittier footage is to stabilize the shot first so that there arent any huge jumps that will throw off the track. Also usually even if there are you can go back in and hand track sections and get a pretty desireable result.
- thanks a lot man. too late now (as date on thread indicates) but advice is usable for future reference. :)janne76

oh btw, track is called "Moving On" by Nick Cave/Warren Ellis for the movie The Assassination of Jesse James. Fantastic music.

yeah.. there will also be a an english version out since this one will go to tv stations abroad as well and to some film festivals.
the international one will feature some more of my art directed titles.. (hopefully.. if the editor can be arsed as this one was extremely exhaustive for the poor fella).anyway, the director was super happy with my help :) so i am happy too. i also got to design the poster as well, but the timespan for that was really really short.. :/
- it's really good, got a link to the poster?version3
- not yet. only an email version yet. still waiting for additional copy.. poster was very much approved though..janne76
- like i said, both editor/director are very very exhausted now, so poster for festival/dvd sleeve will be finalized later..janne76
- and thx btw.. i will pass it on.. :)janne76

this is the docu i needed your help for
http://player.omroep.nl/?aflID=9…
was on tv yesterday and now online (wait for ad to finish).. most of it is in english so you can watch it.thanks for helping me.
:)(i did the title in the intro (not "tegenlicht") but the "lockerbie revisited" part with the car driving over the graveyard..
and a lot of the laptop shots i needed to fill in and motion track in sync with handheld camera..)Thanks a lot again, chossy.
- this docu has a lot of stuff in style of the tv programme that features this, so very few of my hand in this one..janne76

SynthEyes is really good, and has a solid auto track feature...but there is a steep learning curve in order to know how to adjust the auto track and more manual options.
- I hear you. I am hoping that my other chops are up enough, that I can't get into it in not too much time.harlequino

^Thanks, will do. I think SynthEyes rings in around $400, which I think I can swing. Wasn't so sure about PFTrack. It looks fabulous, but I can't find a price, it's one of those "talk to a rep" situations, so it's gotta be steep.

i'd say go with syntheyes. for the money, it's full featured enough for my use let alone its use on some major feature films. I think matchmover pro got killed off when autodesk bought em. boujou and pftrack are the only other players in town and both are quite pricey.
download the syntheyes demo and check it for yourself

Gotcha. I wish I had all types of cool mechanics. :)
- chossy0
No sorry, if we need to do complicated things we use motion control cameras and all types of cool mechanics instead of arsing around with tracking and matching moves etc. etc. if we absolutely had to do tracking, we would normally do some prep. although this isn't always possible admittedly. Like jannes item for example we would probably have made a green screen with a few little markers on it then filmed the lap top so we could get a perfect track, the green is just for contrast no keying would be used until the end to get wrid of the bright green incase you saw a bit of it.
- we don't have greenscreens in Dutchiesland! :( Only bags of green... :Djanne76

On a semi - serious side note - CHOSS - do you use any camera match move apps?
Been looking at PFTrack vs. SynthEyes vs. Matchmover Pro.
Cannot afford Boujou. Any recommendations?

*thinks up hand job joke to make funny on "helping hand"
*fails, goes with meta comment instead

another person helped on qbn! yay!
so i wonder who will be lucky enough to get a helping hand NEXT year?
:)

don't track it, just do a physical mask
- chossy0
I have emailed you back the now, it should look... ok, but it will need a wee tweek, for some reason my computer will not update, around 4 seconds it drifts but just change the motion on those key frames but do it say every 8th frame and delete the ones on between in order to give it a smooth motion.... If it's not right I can work on it after work n say 3 hours as I will be here anyway waiting for loads of stuff to print out :).
- janne760
thanks mate!

Janne, I would track the top right hand edge you see how there is great contrast between that and the curtain.
Also depending on how wobbly it is, I would just use 'Corner Pin'.This footage looks perfectly fine for tracking so track the top right and increase the subpixel accuracy, you will be fine after that :).
