Paul Rand was a great designer and knew it. If a client didn't like the work he presented, they had to look for another designer. He did more bitching about clients than most designers, and it paid off.

Right, and anyone good enough to be pulling that same stunt would not be here on QBN. Furthermore, it was written by Steven Heller, whom I can tell you would rather add to the legend of any given subject he addresses rather than report the facts (out of an (intelligent) desire to sell more books too... designers, surprise surprise). Paul Rand didn't get his start refusing everyone who disagreed, and anyone who believes that is setting themselves up for failure.
This proves my point exactly; designers look to other designers to demonstrate business success, without a) knowing the real story or b) having an even passing understanding of how to grow, manage, and work with the bottom line.

I'm still confused Flatgraph, what's the point of being a dick to people you don't even know? You'll get no argument from me that it's inappropriate to complain ad nauseum about one's clients, but neither is it productive to complain ad nauseum about designers, especially when you come out of the gate making blanket statements based on your personal experiences. Perhaps your time would be better spent heading to the gym, cooling off, then kicking back with a beer.

So let's back up a bit. You made a screen name and posted this topic because you wanted to rant about how badly most designers (though you made it seem like ALL designers) are at managing business?
So what happened to trigger this? If you were merely lurking and sick of hearing it, why not move on to another forum? Or merely pat yourself on the back for being so much better than the rest of them?
What did you expect to come of this thread? For all of us to bow at your feet and beg you for the secrets of your eternal business wisdom? For us to say "Oh my!! Sir, you are SO correct in your blind assumptions. Our rants were merely fronts for our inability to properly compile a spreadsheet. Perhaps if Flatgraph were more civil and less hypocritical in his written interactions, he could get away with posting his work without having to worry about casting a poor reflection on his employer and thus landing himself on the hot seat.

Flatgraph, I don't make passive-aggressive pokes. I was simply making some observations that don't exactly require much insight to deduce. I was also making the point that anonymity isn't necessary as long as people are acting in a civil and professional manner. If you think it's cool to keep pitching a fit and throwing spitballs at the QBN community, then by all means keep your identity secret.

I complain about my clients and sometimes I complain to them. And guess what? Most of the time they listen and thank me for it. It's our job as designers to educate the client in many cases, and the process begins with complaining about their requests. A good client realizes this.
