I've been looking for something like this!
http://designbusinessreview.com/…
I found it on k10k and ordered a copy. I have seen a few books out there that talk about offering practical business advice to creatives, but this is a dedicated magazine, and they seem to have some big names offering up advice in issue 1... Michael Bierut, Joe Duffy, and a CD from BBDO.

Dadang! I got to work on this with some of the founding partners an these guys know what they are doing. The idea was great, so I was happy to be a part of it. And some big names (Michael Bierut, Joe Duffy, Dress Code, Mucca) got on board with support.
Are designers and creatives out there feeling a bit left in the dust with rampant layoffs and little info on how to get and keep jobs, how to promote yourself, etc.?
- Horp0
Is this that thing that Michael Bierut and Joe Duffy got involved with?
- Keenan0
yeah. They did interviews, and gave some awesomely straight answers on how they manage their studios, get clients, etc.

Thanks for the support y'all! The word is getting out.

Thought I would add this bit of info:
"'Creatives must learn the lessons of business so that they may survive the conditions of the present. Otherwise the merging of business and design will continue to be a haphazard and pathetic gamble.'
The objectives of DBR are:
• To bridge the gap between the often disparate theories of design and business
• To recognize that creativity is a renewable commodity
• To provide means for creatives to educate themselves on business and contemporary issues"

My copy of DBR arrived via UPS yesterday and I read it cover to cover on the subway between meetings and at home before dozing off. It’s easy to inhale. I’m pretty upbeat about it for two reasons. One, it’s a great example of getting ideas to market quickly without upfront printing costs (the book is printed on demand via Lulu). Two, I think it’s the right format to spark a conversation. I want more depth in the content but since this is the start of a possibly regular publication there's plenty of room for improvement.

Keenan, sidneyblank, and Williamsir are all the same person posting under multiple names.
wtf.
- I guess he knows how to 'make money in a recession'babaganush

I love the idea!
At a surface level the issue seems a bit dry (from seeing the site), but I'm going to pick it up and see. Hopefully it'll be good as the idea is solid. sidneyblank gives me hope :)

sidneyblank is the same person that started this thread, which is the same person who CREATED this "Design Business review" thing.
his opinion is not worth a shit.
- I don't know why you are so pissed kaonashi but I'm pretty easy to track down as a fully autonomous person who didn't know anyone at fwis until I came across DBR. If you bothered to read what I had to say, it wasn't just laudatory.sidneyblank

i saw this book on aisleone last week and was going to buy it. but after seeing this thread i am rethinking things. very shady.
- Keenan0
ok ok. I am Williamsir, and Sidneyblank, and Kaonashi, and Peezum, and Fiesta, and jfletcher. So thanks Horp and Johndiggity for contributing to my conversation!

Jeasus christ this looks like the shadiest thing I ever heard of a designer promoting himself by fixing his own thread about releasing his product. You're incredibly cheap next time pay for advertising jease.

I ordered one. It is pretty fucking good actually. there is some really useful advise from multiple viewpoints on the business of design, which is hard to find in any book. I'd say it's closest in content to "How to be a graphic designer w/o losing your soul", but a bit more specific on how people run studios and make a profit. 100% recommended for $13
- letterhead0
and yeah that is pretty shady of you Williamsir / Sidneyblank / Kaonashi / Peezum / Fiesta, and jfletcher
- hey hey, don't lump me in there!jfletcher
- oh sorry, just copied the info from a few posts up, haha.letterhead
