I've been looking for a specific url and found it is has been owned by someone since 2000 without ever having a site up. I emailed them to see if they were interested in selling it and this is the reply i received.
Thank you for your email regarding the domain name XXXXXX.com. We are currently developing a website for this domain name. However, we would be willing to sell Getcarded.com if we received a considerable offer. Currently, we estimate the domain name XXXXXX.com at US$10,000. This is due to the domain name being very easy to remember and very essential to the success of our website business. Please let us know if you would like to purchase XXXXXX.com and we will get back to you as soon as possible. I look forward to your reply. Thank you.
So my question is how do I make an offer that is more reasonable in price? I am not that concerned about owning it since I own a similar one, but this one would be nice to have as well. It isn't hurting our business since they don't have a site up anyway. Anyone ever had to go through this?
Thanks.

Sounds like someone just saw dollar signs when your email popped into their inbox, fucking greedy fucks that they are.
I'd move on, if I were you - send them a wee note indicating that you won't even entertain their request as it was of only a peripheral benefit to you. Set up your site, then in a couple of month's time, accidentally drop them a circular mail or newsletter, inadvertently reminding them of your existence. If they've come to their senses, they might make you a more reasonable offer. If they haven't, ignore them ever more.
- That is a good plan. I know they must own a million urls and try this everyday.capn_ron

And sign-up for one of those snatch-em-up services. I bet it expires eventually.

Here is my reply i'm going to send.
While I appreciate your reply, I am not interested in spending $10,000 on a url at this moment. This is a fun art project for me so the most I would be willing to offer would be $50. I have already thought of alternatives in case this situation happened, so I appreciate your time. Have a good day.
Maybe they'll bite and just get rid of it, maybe not. Either way, i already have a url and site up, so no harm done. Thanks for the help.

i have found myself in your situation a few times. every time i send out a request to buy a url, they come back with a ridiculous price tag. best bet is to find or create an alternative url. i hate dbag's who buy up urls and just sit on them. such a waste!

"And sign-up for one of those snatch-em-up services. I bet it expires eventually."
it won't now. here's the deal. these guys squat on these names and say that they are 'building a website' for the domain. this is because they don't want to get into any legal trouble for squatting.
the truth is, they have a price in mind and they aren't going to let it go for too much less. why should they? they can sit on that name for years until a big company comes along willing to fork out the small change to grab it - small change being about $10k-$20k.
check out afternic.com. this site is the pond where this scum settles and waits for someone to help finance their aston martin.

i worked with a client who had to buy domain name from somebody doing nothing with the url. he dropped $8000 for it. ouch! client had to have it, so they dished out the cash.
