i loved this book as a child. upon mention, in comes the warm fuzzy feelings.
But the trailers i have seen sorta leave a bad taste in my mouth. Somehow, i think with all the additional material they have to add to make it a full length movie, will detract from the beautiful simplicity of the original story.
- and if i have to hear the word 'hope' one more time, im gonna start shooting people.baseline_shift
- I hope it doesn't come to that.shitehawke

I don't know the story and i've never ready the book, but there was something disturbing about hearing Tony Saprano's voice coming out of that creature.

I don't know what to think – I see what he was going for, which is a retro sort of 70's-ish feel, what with all the lens flares and non-CG characters in suits and stuff, but something feels... off. Vaguely messy and amateurish.
- thank god they didn't do cg for the characters.baseline_shift
- i think a lot of the movie is assisted with cgplash
- i bet it is. im just glad that all the wild things dont have that glossy pixar look.baseline_shift

i've got the book at home... i'm interested to see how spike's stretched the story out... it's such a short book... love it

I've heard that the screenwriter Dave Eggers (Pulitzer finalist, btw) has written a novelized version of the original story to be released alongside the film, and that accounts for all the additional material beyond the original story. It sounds like he's tried to look at the concept from the perspective of 'what would make a boy this age so angry, and retreat into so vivid an imaginary world.' They were looking for a very real-world situation for the character of Max. Sounds exciting.
- nice, i love dave eggers. you shall know our velocity was great.colin_s

that kid seems too old to be wearing a cat suit.

I don't want to know all the real world trauma that makes Max make up his o so beautiful dreamworld. The absence of the real world makes the book such a dreamy place to be in, because all is very NOT real.

I look at it this way. It's one of the most well loved and well known children's books of all time. Eventually there was going to be a film. Has to be, too much money to be made off it. Whether you are excited for this, or turn your nose up at the approach or very existence of the film is immaterial. This could have been basically "Spiderwick Chronicles" only far worse, released as PG on 4th of July weekend. But it's not. It was put into the hands of Spike Jonze, and written by Dave Eggers, two people who make their own work and are committed to a different type of art. At least it lies at their feet, and has potential to be an interesting approach, and not just a box office CGI fest.
- Good point. Take the boy in a wolf suit and the monsters and create something else and make lots of money.casparclaasen

Looks great, magical. I have no complaints so far, I will pay to go see this and I will pay for all my nieces and nephews (nine of them) to see it too. I would rather they watch this than most of the shallow crap they get exposed to.
The kid reminds me of Mikey from the Goonies.

I've read the book to my son hundreds of times, he absolutely adores it. I think there might me too much realism in the movie, the book has more of a magical, surreal quality.
