Simmer 1 lb split peas and/or red lentils until nearly soft. Set aside.
In another pan, lightly saute 3 cloves garlic and 1 onion in 3 tblps olive oil until clear.
To this add 1 tblsp curry powder, dash cumin, 1tblsp all-purpose flour.
Stir until thick and runny. Keep heating. Add 1/2 cup water, 1/2cup milk quite quickly until smooth and creamy.
Add lentils to this and simmer on low heat, adding mustard, orange juice, peanut butter.
Lighly sauted some dry basmati rice until opaque and some grains start to look brown. Add same quantity of hot water, bring to hard boil, stir, turn down heat to medium/low, cover.
Keep covered until steam stops coming out from lid. Remove lid, fluff with fork until rice is not wet.
Serve pile of rice. Make dip in rice pile, add curried lentils into middle. Serve whilst watching House and drinking beer.

pasta is the cheapest thing to eat, if you have garlic, butter flour and cream on hands, you've got yourself pasta with garlic white sauce for like $3.00 a day.
- Butter and cream are expensive.

pasta tossed with just about anything sauteed in olive oil (for me it was some old sun-dried tomatoes from the back of the cupboard and leftover red wine from parties) is filling and cheap, got me through several periods in college

Ramen is a symbol of struggle...I usually eat the ramen noodles and sprinkle Parmesan all over. It's surprisingly delicious.
- Ramen was a huge part of my college experience. I bought it by the case, and added every imaginable ingredient to it.baseline_shift
