From what I've read and seen, the video is tricky and quality results take time and it actually performs better in low light for video, white balancing is always a necessity. I own a 5d mk1 and am quite pleased with it. I Itch for the video function as well however I've also read that it mainly for stationary positioning as panning causes freezing and jerkiness. also it can only shoot for about 12-15 minutes at a time and the sensor actually warms/heats up over that time and should be sufficient rest to cool between "takes".
I though I would buy this as a segue into video for the lens control/options but will likely hold off a bit longer to get a better video camera as I do not see myself needing anything more than this 5D for photography

am currently renting one for a month-long project - haven't tried out the video capabilities. still-wise, this camera is fucking aces and far outstrips my 30d, in resolution, dynamic range, noise control, everything. the quality at even 1600 iso is nuts - and you can crank it to 25600.
took this last sunday with it (unphotoshopped):

i have one....have not used the video once, but if you are looking for an insanely nice full frame camera that is stunning in low light then i highly reccommend .... this camera plus an "L" series lens is quit a combo.

damnit I still have like 3 invoices to come in before I can pick mine up!
Wasnt sure if I should get 70-200 f2.8 IS or mkii next. I have 5D and 70-200 f4 at the moment. If I got a second body I could retire my 30D backup cam. I shoot corp events and people punching each other a lot Hmm.
- I use the 70-200 2.8 IS alot, but since the 5DII can do higher ISO, try one with your F4 70-200 first...vaxorcist

Anyone know about stabilizing the camera for video?
Last time we needed aerial footage I had to hire a videographer, rent a $75k Sony HD video camera and a crazy mounting rig with a bunch of gyrospoces, all to go in a helicopter. Needless to say it was not cheap and the results were far from stellar - TONS of bouncing in the video, which took ages to get right in post and never looked perfect (there was not much turbulence that day, I was in the front seat of the helicopter).
So just wondering if this would be a reasonable solution? Handheld gyroscope, no sound needed, short shots, etc..
Would be a great justification to get one!

this is good news for people shooting video with the 5D2. new firmware with manual exposure controls while shooting video.

really want to buy one.. I noticed that the cheapest you can find them is list price.. they go up from there.. most camera's come in under list i thought.. I think i will wait .. my wallet is telling me to wait.. i am having a hard time not waiting though :) problem is that i am going to be switching from nikon.. i wish nikon would come out with some sort of 5d killer.. then i could keep my lense's..

According to PDN there is a firmware hack that was just developed that allows for manual exposure control in video mode. The hack also provides a levels graph for sound.- not a hack, official firmware update.
http://www.gizmodo.c…slappy - he's right there was a hack, that also includes audio levels.louiee

Personally, I am waiting for Nikon's D900, which, fingers crossed, should be out any time now.
MkII would be second choice, although I think the 7D feels better in your hand (I think it's an improvement they made with the ergonomics)
