Contacting agencies

I'm trying to solicit agencies for freelance work and have a question for those of you who do the same. If I use the generic "info" or "contact" email on a large agency's website, will it ever make its way into the right hands? Or do I need to get directly plugged in to a CD somewhere?

pure luck. some get through, some never do. 2 things: phone is better than email; if you email, email the owner, their decision counts more than that of any CD.

Sometimes the owner 'is' the CD.
At the end of the day, any decent agency will read your application if it comes through to the general 'info@' email address, or direct to the person who makes the call to hire, usually the CD.
Most agencies are that busy, and get so many applications that it takes time to look through, let alone get back to everyone. I don't respond to every application that comes to me because if I did, I wouldn't get any work done; but I do look at all of them – I'm currently working my way through 85 such emails and they still come in thick and fast.
If there is a better way I'd be keen to hear it.

And most big agencies don't appreciate the cold calling, I would email first.

I just send to however in charge of applications, got some nice replies, but they always ask that should be based in London, NY, etc...

> email you work to the CD
> then follow up with a phone a few days later just to ask if they had a chance to see ur work and whether they outsource any of their work.- Send the guy or girl a phone? Are you crazy?!? I'm not made out of money, Jim.Scotch_Roman
- I could send a slightly used Nokia from 2003...Scotch_Roman

Right but how I find the CD's contact info? Call the front desk? Some of the agencies I'm looking at have many offices around the world, not quite sure how best to begin with agencies like that.
- just call them and ask them. also use adage's datacenter.moveinspace

Put on some decent clothes, put your laptop under your arm with your sample set up on the screen, and go to the place. Someone might have a minute to look at your stuff. And you've made a strong impression by showing up, and you also get a chance to get a feel for their place.
If you don't get in to see anybody, you can chat up the folks out front, and find out who hires freelancers, when they review work, when to leave off your proper portfolio, and get their contact info.
Also, leave behind a few business cards for reception to give to the big cheese.
Then down the hall to the next place.

ehrm, I'm looking worldwide. There are only a couple decent agencies in St. Louis. I can't exactly afford to travel right now.
