so does anyone live anywhere near all of this mayhem that I read about daily?
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/2951…
I mean these numbers are staggering
The drug lords and their soldiers are blamed for having killed more than 6,300 people since January 2008, including more than 1,000 in the first two months of this year alone.
That’s about 100 people every week for the last 14 months.

the kicker is they don't just shoot them, they torture them first

Here in the San Diego news, we hear of killings all the time. It has been quite for a month or so, but it started again. It sucks because I am going to the San Felipe 250 race this coming up weekend.

Yeah it's definitely for real. I feel a little weird being so close to a lot of the violence, yet getting to live in complete ignorance because it doesn't affect many people north of the border........ yet.
And that comment about a GTA game... I swear the stuff I read about it totally out of a game like that or something. Crazy.

i grew up near el paso/juarez - and seeing that city is basically under martial law, shit is gonna get wild in the coming weeks. that city is sketchy as fuck anyway- but now i wouldn't be surprised if it turns into a war zone

I think we need to send about 10 predator drones down there to scout, track then bomb the cartels. What I find interesting is that mexico is just trying to protect the cities instead of trying to squash the cartel. It's like, if you don't go here we won't go there. Utter BS.
- better guns solve everything.. Just look at Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan as an example.winnie_the_shit
- Every cop or official that talks about taking down the cartels gets killed. They just killed a freakin GENERAL a while ago.pocho
- yeah it's not that easy when the cartels are the ones in charge. :(sea_sea

Avoid a third?
Doesn't America already have a war on drugs?
Oh.. wait.. that's on it's own citizens.. my mistake.

I was travelling down there just after Christmas, with my wife and 7 year old daughter. We were on a severely delayed flight, and got into Cancun really late.
So at two in the morning, our taxi gets stopped by machine gun wearing Army guys. We had to all get out while the car was searched. So that sucked.
- happens allll the time.linearch
- happened to me too. not a bad thing and about the money. tolls are robbed all the time.zenmasterfoo

my parents live in New Mexico, it's cleaner and safer than the Old Mexico.

My friends in El Paso say it's not even worth going to Juarez anymore. It used to be no big deal to go to Juarez to see friends, hang out, shop, etc. but that has pretty much stopped. The street vendors are really hurting in downtown El Paso at the border because they depend on the Mexicans coming over to shop.
When you have a whole city that puts themselves under curfew to not leave their house after dark, without police telling them to, then you know it's bad.
The cartels get on the police radio frequencies and call them out by name and say, "Lead or money?" in Spanish. They don't have a choice but to be bought by the cartels because you see what has happened to the ones who aren't cooperating.

Guatemala is just as bad... more than 400 woman murdered in 2008 alone.

^
Guatemala has been in a civil war for 30-40 years.
- Ambushstudio0

We used to go to Baja twice a month at least...it is pretty creepy down there now. That said, if you go looking for trouble you will find it...guaranteed. I won't stay in Rosarito for now.
