How would you make this?

apologies for the crappy image quality btw.

Don't worry, I'm not on crappy software or hardware. Legal CS3 on a 2.4 ghz macbook pro...
I tried to create it really fast. Made to graph lines, blended them and then tried to revolve that with a 3d filter to see how it would look.. just quick and dirty ... illustrator didn't really like me wanting to preview that..

I think is my favourite thread for today.

don't do any blends or gradients on it until you've got the final design down.
the 3D filter will keep crashing if you push it too hard

Get the original file and export it as something useful (I could be wrong, but I think that was already drawn using a "computer" thing).

It's not about recreating the exact thing, but about making a graph like that with the data that i have available. I want to use that style of visualizing a certain data set.
And yes this is a request of the client, but this whole project is about data visualization.
Also, yes this is quickly scanned from a book, which you all know called "Data Flow".
It's quite hard to do those complex shapes in photoshop in the correct perspective, so that's why I'm trying to do it in Illu for now.
Just wondering if there are techniques to do this instead of making the planes and connecting the lines and dots and try to get the perspective right with a good grid.
And of course there's always that couple of smartasses who think everything can be done in 5mins...
It's a valid question, and we're here to help, not to bitch at each other.

Interesting....
"And of course there's always that couple of smartasses who think everything can be done in 5mins..."
and...
"I tried to create it really fast... just quick and dirty ..."

First off, its not in perspective, its done in a shallow 'isometric' grid. If you look at the extreme data points far left and far right at the back of the grid, they are the same distance apart as the two extreme points at the front... ie, its not done in perspective.
Secondly you either wish to 'code' some software to take data and generate a graph like this, or you just want to visually recreate a static 2d visual representation of that graph style. Assuming its the latter, then the best and only way to do this is to draw it. You've reached the glass ceiling of computer ability here and there is no quicker way of drawing it than actually drawing it.

"there is no quicker way of drawing it than actually drawing it"
This is my new favourite phrase.

File > Save.

3d or 2d, easy, in 2d put the image on a layer and just copy it, in 3d simplest polygons ever.

If you really feel like you need to use a plugin:
http://rj-graffix.com/software/p…or just generate the right sized iso-grid paper as a pdf and use it as a guide:

@fiesta: My thoughts exactly. Nodebox or Processing.
@Jordy: You said "somebody else can do the programming I just have to make it look nice first." Wow. You better learn some coding skills son! Designer/programmers are a growing breed. We'll eat your lunch.
Coincidently what's your deadline on this? ;) I'm looking to pick up some more work.
- we already have the programmers doing it .. all inhouse.Jordy

Dont use gradients. Use solid color with hue value change. This will cause illustrator to stay in tact.

why would this crash illustrator?
i've done more complex imagery with no problem.unless that is.. its a ripped copy of illustrator
