No idea kelpie but the system works. I tried 3012 x 2104.
It gave me these numbers:
60 | 302 | 134 | 24 | 8
Using your method I got this answer:
Add 3 + 4 from 134, then carry the 1 onto 302 to make 303.
this leaves us with 60 | 303 | 7 | 24 | 8 = 603037248
Remove the zeros:
6337248 - the right answer.

Tried exactly the same method with 3103 x 2041 (zeros in a different place).
60 | 212 | 103 | 22 | 3
Ends up with 62133223 but the right answer is 6333223. You could add the 2+1 from the first number to get to that stage but I think that's stretching it a bit thin.
