So, casting my mind back, the ADC Young Guns awards got a pretty cold reception on here last year and no-one really fancied entering. I said it at the time and I'll say it again now, $100 to enter an entire portfolio of work was pretty cheap seeing as most other schemes charge the same for a single entry. And besides, I'd had a pretty good year and fancied sharing my work.
Consequently I was selected as one of the winners, which I was really pleased about; it was a nice excuse to get out to NY again, go to the awards show, meet a few people, that kind of thing and I got my work in a nice book and a nice shiny glass cube for my mantlepiece.
Later in September I got a call asking if I'd like to design next year's call for entries and identity which was flattering and slightly nerve wracking. I've beavering away on it in my spare time since then and wanted to post up my development work which can be seen here:

I thought, seeing as not many people on here particularly enthused about entering it last year, that I'd get some pretty honest feedback about how's it's turned out and whether you'd consider going for it this year? It's a pretty weird identity but I'm happy with how it's turned out.
Thoughts?

Looks lovely. But it can be easily summed as..
"I was asked to do ADC YG ID, what you guys think?"
- I like writing. Everything about the internet is so abrupt.wordsarepictures

$100- per submission x 1 thousand to 2 thousand submissions = $200,000 profit.
Great Ponzi scheme! Who is ADC's financial advisor, Bernard Madoff?

Is it still a bi-annual thing or is it every year now?
- I think as of now it's going to be every year.wordsarepictures

My comment:
Its lovely but nothing that stands out.
- but lovely considering pro-bono!babaganush
- first one to crack a U2 gag is a cock...:)babaganush
- Pro-bono shouldnt stop someone from doing great work.********
- depends on what value you attach to your workbabaganush
- Value is what you have accomplished, not how much you got paid.********
- Tell my bank manager :). I get your point though. Still think it was pretty good.babaganush
- Indeed, it is nice but I think it could be better in exploration and polishing the thought.********

I think exploring further in to the triangular shape is required. It seems unfinished and not polished. Your explanation could apply to many different shapes and not specific to tangram as per chinese puzzle. I would even look at architecture in further explanation or exploration. You will find that, that shape is very much alive in application.

Entrants must be 30 years of age or younger when the entry site opens on March 19, 2009, and must have been working professionally for at least 2 years (both full-time and freelance work qualify). We will require a proof of age in the form of a Passport, State ID or drivers license from all entrants.

Thanks for the thoughts JSK, although I think it's not really about triangles rather, lots of different disciplines (designers, art directors, photographers, animators etc etc) coming together to create a whole. The tangram is an execution of that idea and, I guess, can't be finished as such - the implication being that you can make whatever you like out of it.
- I say 'I think', I mean 'It's not'. That is the concept.wordsarepictures

not quite on the tangram tangent, but maybe some inspiration..

That can be said about circles also. I recently saw a show about Sydney Opera house. It was genius in shape that translates from geometric circle.
The idea of triangle that makes a differentiated shapes and coming together as a whole is repeated in typography and other graphical disciplines.
If I was to continue the path of that shape, I would prefer seeming extruded and more in architectural shapes with physicality of perspective. Not just simple flat shapes that creates another. Add another dimensions to it. You can change the perspective of the shapes as you turn it and it becomes something new. Much like in architecture, you can never see the whole building but its all about perspective.
Say, you make ADC with triangles but use z axis in perspective. As the combined shapes move or turn, it introduces new perspective. When I see that shape I think of opportunity to realize differentiation of shapes in every angle. New angle, new perspective, all around.

Take pictures of things made out of paper.

We're working on something just like that for the interactive elements, JSK, I'm glad you see it is a logical progression, i wondered if it was a jum too far. But it's complementary to the flat, graphic print work. WIP here:

I see that as more of movement, I dont think it requires that drastic movement. I sent you email of something that I just piled up with paper.

The shapes can stationary but as your perspective changes, it can be something new.
I could see that being on a wall as a nice extruded signage.

I like what you made but i will never enter a competition where you to pay to join. First of all they have sponsors, second they get a lot of publicity & third they make a nice some of money with the book sales.
For me its just wrong that they are making money of the back o young designers and even let them pay for it.But that's just me.
But still, nice work you did there.

I guess this is somewhat related to this topic but I was thinking of entering into this years Young Gun awards. We'll see I guess...
- I think I'm going to try and give it a go this year as well. I just wonder if they judge interactive like every other annual.thoughtandtheory
