Some time back there was talk of accreditation but then they realized that no one can really define what the profession is so it would be impossible:)

"must know photoshop" - pretty much covers it.

There's a complete lack of respect and consideraion for what we do. The fact that we get to 'play' around in frnt of a computer all day, doesn't mean this is a hobby. I know this field has its pros and cons, but hey, it's way better than some of the jobs I've seen out there. It is not as easy as it seams, and the lack of understanding makes students believe this is easy money. Schools like ITT only make things worse, and produce mediocre professionals that ....
A. Recent graduate sucks, and only studied design/advertising because it seemed like the cool thing to do and because it 'justifies' a Mac. Does some shitty work for small print shops or Kinko's, and realizes he will never make it to a large or respectable agency or make any decent money by doing this. Quits, and ends up working on something else...
B. Total hack, decided to pursue this career because he thinks of himself as an 'artist' and is better and hotter than anything out there. Only difference with guy A, is that this one has the money to live off 1 client a year and start his own studio. Go figure...

i guess country and schools differs from each other but. in sweden "newly examinated" students often mean fresh ideas and unspoiled visions wich is sought after. skills and standards is something you pick up on the road but idea work is more a virgin thing.

Yeah there maybe a lot of graduates, but not everyone who graduates has talent in design itself.

My pet hate is anyone who does an IT degree and then calls themself a "Multimedia Designer" ..
Shame on them.

maybe the question should be 'not enough design jobs' ?
I've noticed increasingly over the last few years more templates (some pretty good) for web and print design that are cheap if not free and easily accessible.
From a client point of view it must be an attractive option - to think you can by a cheap design 'out of the box' that looks decent (in their mind) and just slap their own logo and content into it, and voila job done...
Machines replaced human labours in the factory... maybe templates/cheap 'out of the box' design will replace us from the design industry?

I think we need ask ourselves a very important question. Could the world function without graphic designers? (and if there weren't any - what would this brave new world be like?)

There have been too many designers since the mid-90s. Nothing new here. The dot-com crash weeded out a lot of the wannabes, but still left quite a few. This recession is a lot more serious to date, and I think ultimately it will be good for graphic design, painful though it may be right now for many of us.

Too many designers != Too many good designers

The real problem is, there are too many people

if you're the shit you have nothing to worry about.

I love an article about a surplus of designers can't even get its point across clearly. Gets lost in the details, etc. Would have been nice if a designer or someone can communicate for a living wrote it instead of an imposter.
Too many designers indeed.
- Steven Heller is a pretty well known design writer FYIukit

Focus more on strategy and how to pitch the idea. Even a mediocre designer can excel and stand out from the pack.
