I always heard that LaCie uses the cheapest of the cheap HD's. I've had nothing but problems with the past 2 I've had. I don't view them as very reliable back up drives. I use them for movies / television.
As far as drobo is concerned, looks great. Sign me up, or someone buy me one.
- i've had more than one friend lose everything off of LaCies. Maxtor /Seagate I hear are sturdyBrokenHD

RAID litterally means: Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks
the point or Raid was always to be able to swap in and out cheaper drives with the redundancy and protection in the fact that there are two of them. so yes, many times RAID systems are made up of cheaper drives.
i just got a LaCie 2Big Dual that has e-sata connection and I/O's at 3gbps... Drobo can't beat that on USB2. i love my LaCie drive. fast, silent and secure.

Im not a spammer foo, ive been chillin on qbn since /03. lulz. (But i could see the how u'd infer). Im actually at the Apple Store /The Grove right now, returning the WD 1TB Raid0 i just bought, so i can add the $$ back to my personal "Get A Drobo" fund. I figure all u data-amassing creative types'd be into it ^_^
- It's a little suspicious that your username is BrokenHD and you're at the Apple Store with a broken HD. Since '03 you say?monospaced
- i used to go by BrokenAC till my harddrive crashed and someone here suggested the name changeBrokenHD

Drobo (or, Durobo) is "theif" in Japanese.
That moronic aneqdote aside,
anyone got an opinion on the "G" drives from G-technology?
Specifically, the raided ones.

"ive been chillin on qbn since /03"
spamming since 03 you say?I've heard some bad things about Drobo, nice idea but the implementation is a bit unreliable which kinda defeats the point of a backup

I haven't heard many first-hand accounts, but we've got a Drobo at work that so far has worked well. It replaced a dead LaCie.
