I grew up in Madison.. left 15 years ago, so it has changed a bit... downtown is cool, suburbs are sprawling, mallparking lots and such.... Near east side, like Jennifer Street is cool. I miss the co-ops, like the mural on the side of the Mifflin Street Coop and the Huge picture of Che Guevara inside.... not sure if it's still there. Good food downtown too. Note that the areas outside of town used to be a bit of a culture war land... imagine Sarah Palin supporters in places where you would not expect it... I drove a volvo in the 80's and when I stopped for gas in rural wisconsin, people would ask if I was from "The People's Republic of Madison"
- hmmm, now im a bit scared, but i have driven in rural oregon and it sounds a bit similar.refunktion

Madison is definitely a college town and that's about it. It is also the state capitol, so it's nice if your into politics as well. I would suggest living downtown, that's were the action is. It's on an isthmus as well, so you have two big beautiful lakes on either side of you. Good food, good drink places too.

Yeah, what everyone else said: if you're going there for snowboarding, I hope you have some kind of machine that actually creates mountains out of the hills they call ski resorts there.
I've been to a couple places up there; it's tolerable in the sense that it's "something, anything" local, but it pales in every comparison to the riding I'm used to at Breckenridge.

i am in Milwaukee too, and dr bombay does make this place better

I grew up in Madison too. I'm probably biased because I grew up on the west side, but I'd agree that you should live on the west side or downtown. The east side is a bit more blue collar, but it's got some nice stuff too.
Madison is very much a liberal university town. Lots of arts and culture downtown. Lots of lakes and outdoor stuff to do. I don't snowboard so I can't speak to that, but there's plenty of snow in the winter. They also love to drink beer.
For what it's worth, Milwaukee is a really cool (slightly bigger) city too, and it's just over an hour away. But again, I'm biased because that's where I live now.
- sweet, thanks! i also enjoy beer... good beer, usually.refunktion
- East side is only blue collar if you consider Oscar Mayer "blue collar"!TResudek

dude, don't go there for the snowboarding, that is for sure
- yeah... i made it a rule that i need to be able to ride wherever i am.refunktion

it sounds like the snowboarding shock i will get is the size of the hills.
- Did you get a job? If so I'm stoked for you brolagwagon73

Snowboarding in the upper peninsula of Michigan is actually really great. I don't think that's too far of a trip from Madison. Lots of lake effect snow. In the summer Wisconsin has lots of outdoor shit going on like plenty of lakes and some great fishing.

If you're from Oakland - as it says in your profile - you are in for a weather shock.
What's the company?
- im originally from portland though. and i can't talk about the company just yet.refunktion
- heavyt0
oh, i thought maybe it was in a suburb.
Further advice, stick to the west side of town. Everything new and good seems to happen there these days.
- refunktion0
heavyt, I am not considering any specific location other than Madison area since thats where the company is.
