graphic design can't do anything, ever.

Designers who view their own work as works of art are pretentious cunts.

why don't start doing art from the begining?

You provide a service for a client and you get paid for that service. A bit like a prostitute. In fact, a LOT like a prostitute.

1. Over the last few decades, miners in South Africa have been digging up mysterious metal spheres. Origin unknown, these spheres measure approximately an inch or so in diameter, and some are etched with three parallel grooves running around the equator. Two types of spheres have been found: one is composed of a solid bluish metal with flecks of white; the other is hollowed out and filled with a spongy white substance. The kicker is that the rock in which they where found is Precambrian - and dated to 2.8 billion years old! Who made them and for what purpose is unknown.
2. In 1938, an archeological expedition led by Dr. Chi Pu Tei into the Baian-Kara-Ula mountains of China made an astonishing discovery in some caves that had apparently been occupied by some ancient culture. Buried in the dust of ages on the cave floor were hundreds of stone disks. Measuring about nine inches in diameter, each had a circle cut into the center and was etched with a spiral groove, making it look for all the world like some ancient phonograph record some 10,000 to 12,000 years old. The spiral groove, it turns out, is actually composed of tiny hieroglyphics that tell the incredible story of spaceships from some distant world that crash-landed in the mountains. The ships were piloted by people who called themselves the Dropa, and the remains of whose descendents, possibly, were found in the cave.

hahahah not quite, art is like prostitution where banks and rich people save taxes.... buying no-sense crap (not always but most of the time)

If graphic design transcends commercial roots and becomes art, then it becomes art, and at that point ceases to be commercially rooted.
Piet Mondrian would be a good example I think.

I think that any graphic designer who is worthy of the title - should be equally happy being called a visual engineer.
Because a graphic designer solves problems, visually.
- 'Graphic designing' and 'solving problems' are not exclusively connected. Its possible to 'graphically design' yet to solve nothing.********
- nothing.********
- I disagree.. because you are always affecting the message that's being communicated. It's impossible not to at least attempt to answer the the base problem; creating effective communication.********
- attempt to answer the problem of creating effective communication.********
- (.. even if you fail miserably)********

I wonder if financial planners have these conversations...

If you sell art doesn't it become commercial?

I like to call myself "Mother of visually birthed conceptual responses"

sometimes i think this discussion is more based in the fact that we care about our work and want some recognition as creative talents... But Design is not based in feelings, is production, and business oriented.

the designer/artist must be extremely talented. like philip stark wich is not a graphic designer but same thing goes for gd.it's just a matter of talent.

I was thinking about this problem last night, and I think it's all to do with freedom. The graphic designer is not free - the graphic design is intrinsically constrained to the brief and to the wishes of the client. The artist is completely and utterly free.
Sometimes a graphic designer becomes so well respected and famous - that they're given the same level of freedom that an artist is usually accustomed to. In which case, graphic design transcends the commercial to become art (even if it's used to sell a product).

So art is like prostitution and design is like online dating?
