I've just upgraded from a G5 to a new Mac Pro, so I've had to get all new software n stuff. I'm really not good at web stuff so I'm sorry if my explanation below is amateur and ill-informed, but here is what I need to do...
On my old G5 running DreamweaverMX from 2003 or so, I had my website in a folder on my hard disk, and when I made a new page I saved it there, and when I put images on that page I saved the images there. It was then mirror'd on my site server.
Now I have a new machine and Dreamweaver CS3, I have instructed Dreamweaver to locate my site files at the remote server, but how do I now 're-anchor' that cluster of files onto my hard drive again... or don't I... or... what?
Can anyone advise in a way that a total webbuffoon might understand??

Ummm not 100% what your after but in DW CS3 go to sites>manage site> highlight your site >edit ...choose the root file and image files??
Sorry if this doesn't help

^ Thanks. I'm really very good at explaining myself because I'm just not a web person. Basically now I'm on my new machine I want to continue adding work to my website, but I don't know how. In Dreamweaver mx I had two columns in my site files window. The one on the right was the files at my remote server, the one on the left was a mirror copy situated on my hard disk. When I wanted to add something a dialogue box would say "This file is located outside your root folder do you want to copy it there?" and it would then add it to that root folder (I'm not even sure 'root folder' is the correct term).
Becuase its a fresh new machine and Dreamweaver app I no longer have a 'root folder' on my mac that Dreamweaver refers to... my site is not 'anchored' on my machine so there's no root folder to put things in to make changes and additions to my site.
I don't know if that helps any. I may have to abandon the enquiry due to a total lack of specialist vocabulary! but thanks if any can understand and help out... I'm trying to create a new 'root folder' for my website on my new machine so I can carry on adding to it.

site>new site .. and just point the path at the folders on your HD.
I know what you mean about the dual view , windows>files and on the tool bar there is a little image that looks like a window click that !!
This is probably totally wrong but I tried !!

Spooky, do you mean your local files for your site?
- I need to download from the host server onto my HD and have that as my 'root' folder on the new machine... ! ?temporary_name

Just a quick thought...
Jimv, you said:
"site>new site .. and just point the path at the folders on your HD"my site isn't on my HD, its on the hosting server. What I need to do is pretty much the opposite... I need to 'downlaod' my site files from my hosting company's server, and create a new local version in a folder that Dreamweaver recognises as officially being 'the place where I work on my website'.
I wish I was less of a retard.

Ah okay, gotcha. Hang on, writing up some quickie instructions.

1) Make a new folder on your local HD for your site, where ever you want.
2) Open Dreamweaver and create a new site, SITE > NEW SITE
3) Name yer site and point the LOCAL ROOT FOLDER to the folder you just made on your local HD (it's empty right now, I know)
4) Add your HTTP ADDRESS, below it
5) Click (to the left) on REMOTE INFO and choose (I'm presuming) FTP
6) Fill in your FTP credentials
7) Hit OK
8) From the FILES PANEL (WINDOW > FILES or F8) select REMOTE VIEW
9) It should take a sec for DW to communicate with your server because it's kind of slow as a dog, once it has you'll see all of your remote site contents, Highlight them
10) Once you've got all your files highlighted (high-lit?) press the DOWN arrow on the FILES PANEL (on hover it should say GET FILES or something)
11) DW should now download all of your remote files to the local folder you prescribed
12) Remember to get out of REMOTE view and back into LOCAL view on the FILES PANEL once you're all done downloading.OR
Use Transmit to gather all your files from your remote server and then set up a new DW site.
- Thanks Pylon, I'm going to go away and try this. I may end up in the middle of the road, naked and weeping, but it looks like the answer.temporary_name
