I can't justify the rent in Los Angeles with the current market strength.. my freelance has slowed down ten-fold.

I guess in a recession / depression / amageddon situation a lot of the things we don't need are actually not produced.

not in my head, in employer's heads. I feel I have alot to offer and am having no luck whatsoever with online job sites... can't put off the web design any longer. Seems that is the majority of jobs out there

Could you team up with a web developer who needs someone to design? There are plenty of freelancers out there who have good tech skills but shit design sense ... I think that the middlemen (agencies) are gonna fall, but there work will still be out there. Need to become a businessmen/women, rather than people who are served briefs.

another interesting thing I've seen is a boom in design shop's and agencies looking for interns in this recession.

..if see adverts asking for free work, I generally send a mail stating how I hope they'll choke on their free lunch if they get it. It makes me very angry. grr.

maybe, but globally, digital is the only true genuine growth market. I work for a digital agency in London, and we are recruiting, and im getting more job offers than I ever have.
As with anything it's timing. Green Economy and Digital Economies are the ones to be in. If you're not in them...
