When Letterman said something like "We'll see about that," you could Phoenix kind of mumble, "I've seen some of the performers you've had on here, they're not..." as if to point out that not all Letterman's musical guests are very good.
That line was really funny.

I have read this is all a put on and he is self destructing on purpose. Ohhhh, I wish I could consume mass quantities of narcotics in the name of art and then turn it around on everyone, come out with a documentary then say HAHA.

That's really weird. If he's in character, then it's not really funny imo.
I don't mind the beard, but the matted hair makes him look like a hobo version of John Belushi.

It was funny because Phoenix grinned and laughed a bit when Letterman said "Well Jaquin, it's too bad you couldn't be here tonight."
I think JP really thought that was funny.

Totally reminded me of this old clip of Harmony Korine on Letterman. After watching two minutes of it I think it got ME high.

i do think letterman was being a bit of a dick with him. he can ham it up w/some actors but JP seemed uncomfortable right off the bat...letterman pushed it a bit IMO.
JP did seem to have a good laugh at the "sorry JP couldn't be here tonight" remark.

ok so he was high... most of his interviews that ive seen in the past have gone similarly - i dont see what the big deal was
