So was this all a joke for the audience, or is Phoenix loosing the plot? I thought it was quit funny for Letterman, the smug little shit.

reminiscent of the scene in The Royal Tenenbaums..
Peter Bradley: Now, your previous novel...
Eli: Yes, "wildcat".
Peter Bradley: Not a success. Why?
Eli: Well... wildcat was written in a kind of obselete vernacular...
[long pause]
Eli: ... wildcat... wild... cat...
[he stares into space]
Eli: ... pow... wildcat... I'm going to go.- I was thinking the same thing hahamarychain

is here trying to bust an Andy Kaufman kinda thing? If not whatever drugs he is on, I would hope he post it in his blog. Cause I am down to take a break from life too.

I heard that all this is part of a film project about famous losing it including the whole rap/beard stuff.

He is just taking the piss out of the pretentiousness of it all, I like him.

LOL at this comment on the Huffington Post!
"Okay, this REALLY disturbs me. He was obviously high on something that was making him paranoid, beyond drunk, beyond stoned. Trust me, I've been there. Somebody needs to step in, or I'm afraid the world is going to have another Heath Ledger on its hands. Very sad. I hope he gets clean."

"Joaquin needs our help and our prayers. Someone should reinvest in this guy and get him some help. He is crashing and burning. Someone should stage an intervention."
I would pay good money to see "A&E Intervention: Joaquin Phoenix SPECIAL"; after that duster chick it ought to be brilliant!

"How extremely painful. I hope someone who loves him intervenes on his behalf. He's obviously very depressed and angry. He's a talented actor, but I certainly wouldn't call him a genius. He seems awfully self-absorbed, which could be a result of a serious drug addiction."
"You know what's kind of funny? Everyone here is freaking out about Phoenix's "bizarre" behavior when the only really bizarre thing he did was stick his gum to Dave's desk.
LISTEN to what he was saying. His responses were perfectly normal, yet we think they are "bizarre" because of how we expect a celebrity to respond to what are essentially yes or no questions.
His reactions to the audience and Paul Shafer actually had merit. What in the hell are you people laughing at? It bothers me too when people instinctively laugh at things that aren't funny.
This is an elaborate social experiment, and everyone's reaction here is proving his theory right."

"I hope for his sake that this is an act. If not, I am very worried about him. After all what kind of rap singer looks like he's trying out for ZZ Top? When I saw him on Oprah a couple of years ago promoting his Johnny Cash movie, he was happy and personable. This has to be some kind of stunt."

How can these people be worried about someone they've never met. I think he's mocking that too. Thousands show up to a funeral of someone famous they've never met, spoken to or been around. It's crazy.

whatever he's up to is working -- everyone's talking about him today.
dude's probably pulling a Borat-style hoax for a film.
- coco_ono0
i'm so sure that some people who haven't been in tuned with his new direction are probably taking this phase of his as a joke and it's really pissing him off. man...this is so sad.

I just bumped Joaquin Phoenix up on my celebrity death list, he will be checking out within 2 years!
- coco_ono0
oh wait...so it is an act...

We'll certainly keep you on our... rolodex

So he's pretending to be a guy who is crazy, who is at the same time also pretending to be crazy, but isn't?
