Anyone on here actually work in hollywood? Not just living/working in LA, but at a larger studio doing movie posters or art direction for sets on high budget movies etc.? I've seen quite a few interactive folios, but always wonder how glamorous or political that scene is for print designers specifically in the movie industry?
I'm always amazed when you meet/hear of directors that make their entire living off of old B-rated horror movies that no one has heard of or producers that make millions off old chips reruns.

yes, I understand, royalties, yadda yadda... My old design professor used to tell me some firms out there offer either salary or "pennies" for each piece sold project per project... I.E. you design a package for bed bath and beyond and get 3 cents for every product sold... I always wondered if hollywood ever offers the same. You see so many posters, video game, cd covers, yadda yadda and wonder if any studio offers royalties for design and not just salary. More so, the post was about the "glamour" of hollywood and the true B.S. they deal with in their "dream" jobs for some.

I do some work for LA film studios, but I don't work there. From my limited experience I can tell you that it's fun to work on that stuff (usually), there is zero glamour, it's as political and about networking just as NY is, and how one is paid for that work has zero to do with how producers/talent is paid for their work.

Aren't all those stuff done by the same big companies who do the movie titles and stuff? Prologue, yU+co, Picturemill, Imaginary Forces...
I almost moved there to go work at one of them, but missed my chance. About the scene: just watch Californication :D

skt is probably more of an authority on this. He does loads of (very very good) work for entertainment out there.

i do exactly what you described, except our agency is around 9 people total.
in this industry nobody makes "royalties" off of poster design, it belongs to the movie studio. they pay us huge sums of money and we hand over the files to them and the print house.
i can't really comment on the political or glamour angle having not really worked anywhere else before, but i imagine it's not too different from anywhere else, except i do photoshoots often with the actors and sometimes work directly with the directors.

scarabin would also be a guy to ask on here.

Scarabin, nice@! I asked, because one of our main clients is a credit union out of Hollywood, First Entertainment (perhaps you bank with them?)... They do financing for actors, hollywood execs, etc. I'm contemplating a move out to LA and have decent work for a midwestern in both print and broadcast. Love Stardust and Blind motion graphics in Santa Monica as well! However, the goal would be to land a post production gig within the entertainment industry. You guys wouldn't be doing any hiring possibly? Sad attempt, I know, but you guys might like my work if given a look over.

Scarabin, your site reminds me of the artwork of Kris Kuksi (I went to school with this kid in a small kansas town) and now he is worldwide... Ridiculously good artist with a style you might like.
- those sculptures are insane! i wish i could see a larger image of those.lvl_13

Yeah, kuksi is good, his craftsmanship and attention to detail is ridiculous in person. Funny, just a few years ago, dude was teaching intro to painting and driving a 70's veedub beattle... Next thing I know I see him on every art forum and design blog, than I see his new sculptures in juxtapoz and posted on gizmodo.com of all places... Reminds me of that 2pac and Snoop song, "every other video, I see the same hoes"...

You'll find print based graphic designers working within the Art Dept before and during the filming of a movie, but then they finish, the movie goes into post-production and usually a whole new creative team step in to deal with marketing, posters etc.
Sometimes themes established by the designers within the movies may make it through to the marketing graphics(evil company logos etc), but not too often.
