Meeklo,
I get the cell phone thing, but I once read an interview with some very well known job hiring person, or career adviser, something like that, and they said "if someone shows up at an interview without a watch, I don't trust that I can depend on them. I don't trust that they can be punctual and depended on to be exactly where they need to be when they need to be."
Might be a little extreme these days, sure, but at the very least a watch is a way that a man can get extravagant with jewelery and really show off their personality in a way that people notice. It's kind of a status thing I guess.

Get something elegant and simple. The more extra things you have the more it looks you're trying to brag. Also, get one with no second hand. Higher class.

Do the more expensive watches like Omega and Rolex hold their value well as investments?
- formed0
Generally, yes. Most importantly they will last forever. My father has an Omega Seamaster that is about 40 years old now (it was a gift).
They are really 'investments', but you gotta appreciate them or you might as well get a Swatch. They're jewelry and a fashion statement/status symbol. Just like buying a Porsche or Ferrari, you don't need it, but damn nice to have!
Two things to keep in mind - you'll notice that there will be identical looking watches, but huge differences in pricing.
Automatic - the classic gravity driven movement/power, more expensive
Quartz - the battery powered version, much cheaper
As an FYI, you can get super deals on ebay, just be careful to do your due diligence (call the people, make sure serial numbers are intact and legit, etc.). I've bought 3 watches from ebay (2 Bertolucci's and Tag). Probably saved about $3-4k by doing that.
Brand new, in the boxes, papers, etc.You can find anything on there, from the less expensive companies (like Tag and Omega) to the outrageous ones like IWC, Vacheron Constantin, etc.

Anyone that thinks along the lines of 'oh I've reached a certain age, I must buy an expensive dress watch in order to prove my status as an adult male' is a fucking idiot.
