Fix gear is the new roller blades.

Here's mine. I've posted it before. I run it as a singlespeed. I flipped the hub and tried out the fixed gear for a few days but I wasn't feelin' it. I understand the benefits of a fixed gear for city riding, but IMO a freewheel singlespeed is better.
I think singlespeeds are great for urban cruising, commuting, etc..
Even all you haters have to admit that constantly adjusting derailleurs is a pain in the ass. I ride a singlespeed primarly to avoid that headache. Gear noise drives me nuts!

I do love my old raleigh fixed gear conversion.... a fixie with cruiser handlebars is a gentler introduction to riding such a beast....

The hardest part of riding a fixie is when your expensive girl's jeans (skinny) get stuck in the chain.

I think some people don't understand that there are foot breaks on single speed bikes and the need for a hand break would only be used for 2 reasons.
1. if you are traveling fast and need to stop quickly.
2. you are traveling down a hill and need to stop.If you live in a flat city, and you are only pedaling from block to block, because thats how cities work. Then you should have no problem stopping with a foot brake, if you know how to use it.

I remember in one of the other threads about this, someone asked why there were no brakes and the guy said..
'...brakes are like the man, there to stop you...'

There is some confusion here about the difference between a fixed gear and a coaster brake. A fixed gear means you cannot coast, and to slow the bike, you have to resist the forward motion of the pedals, or lock your legs and do a skid. A coaster brake, by contrast, allows you to coast, and to brake, you push back at the 3 or 9 o'clock positions. A single-speed has one gearing, lets you coast, and to stop you must use a handbrake.
Fixed gear does not necessarily imply that there are no handbrakes. Most of the people I know who ride a fixed gear use a brake. Unless you're doing tricks like barspins or actually riding on a track, a brake is good to have.

it's just a different type of riding. if it suites the way you ride and where you ride, then get one. if it doesn't, then get another bike. why is it that road bike riders think fixies are stupid?
i don't ride 500km a week on hilly terain. i live in a flat city and sometime need a way of getting home from the pub when im completely shattered.
does everyone need to ride the same bike?
