Just curious. How many of you are listening to their iPod with the equalizer* set to "NONE" and using the small white earbuds that came with the iPod ?
* yes there's an equalizer in the iPod. A list of presets. After many tests the best one is "Rock".
Iam curious to see how many people are totally fucking up their user experience at listening to music. I can't imagine listening to 128kps compressed mp3 with an equalizer set to none on a iPod and with the stupid white earbuds.

I have those sennheiser headphones too, they're great.
I'm a musician and do lots of recording so I care about sound quality,
BUT when you're listening to your ipod on the tube, in the street wherever, there's so much background noise that I don't care about the general EQ day to day. I still get the same enjoyment out of my music, it's only ever relative. You won't notice the difference until you hear is relative to another setting, same goes to some extent to headphones. Why would anyone ever spend hundreds of pounds on headphones??And I still maintain that no one can hear the difference between a CD and a decent quality mp3 in a double blind test. And if you can, you need to get on with your life

I am using a Creative Zen player with crappy earbuds I picked up at Staples from a clearance bin. So, am I totally fucking up my user experience?
Yes. Yes I am. And I'm going to do it now just to spite benfal99.

I imagine the best one depends on what music you are listening to

I would never spend lots of money on headphones. It makes sense if you're a sound person or into audio production, etc., but, otherwise, there's no need. Especially, as Baskerville noted, if you listen to your music on the bus or when you're just waiting or wandering out in public.
I have about 5-6 different types of earbuds, and all of them were below $50. I do agree that the standard white earbuds are extra shite, so I'm in the middle somewhere. It's really hard to find headphones and in-earphones (or whatever they're called) for someone with smaller ears, like myself, so I have to use earbuds. There's only a limited number of good-quality earbuds out there that don't require you to go over your budget.
(Whenever possible, I try to get a file over 192kps).
- I see. Whenever the kind torrent peoples supply them yeah? Shame on you.********
- Yes, of course. Surprisingly, I've been buying more stuff from the iTunes store. Better quality sometimes, and less work.Jaline

i rip my CD's at 320kps with all the best settings in iTunes. i guess iam crazy. And iam using Seinnheiser headphone. Its just funny how we have the technology compare to 1980 but how we were listening to way much quality back then.

I have great audio technica headphones that I wear on the way to and from work and work. Beautiful sound, great detail, cool as he'll looking and worth every penny of the $170 I spent on them.
I do need to get new earbuds since I just stared a gym membership and the stock earbuds won't cut it.
Also, FYI, the iPod classic line have far better sound than any other apple device. I've compared the iPhone, classic, and my nano, all on rock and hip-hop (which has far better bass than any other setting for sub-par headphones or earbuds) and the classic sounded better than all. Reason I say that is it's a classic from late 2007, and this is a 3g iPhone.
But yeah, the stock earbuds? Nothing screams "I don't give a crap about music quality" more than those.

- I think lots of girls look ridiculous in headphones like this. Unless they wear it around their necks...Jaline

FWIW, Ipods have pretty high quality digital to analog converters in them, relatively speaking for a consumer device. With a decent set of headphones and V0 vbr or 320 cbr, you should get great sound quality from an ipod. Ambient noise not withstanding, etc...

those sennheiser headphones work with a G1 iphone?

using eq is like buying a monet and deciding it needs a few extra brush strokes. if you have a decent system, eq is not necessary and should never be used! i have some strong opinions on the subject of audio.
