I would never spend lots of money on headphones. It makes sense if you're a sound person or into audio production, etc., but, otherwise, there's no need. Especially, as Baskerville noted, if you listen to your music on the bus or when you're just waiting or wandering out in public.
I have about 5-6 different types of earbuds, and all of them were below $50. I do agree that the standard white earbuds are extra shite, so I'm in the middle somewhere. It's really hard to find headphones and in-earphones (or whatever they're called) for someone with smaller ears, like myself, so I have to use earbuds. There's only a limited number of good-quality earbuds out there that don't require you to go over your budget.
