I didn't read all the posts, but I agree that you should always have some money for yourself incase something happens. What about doing a percentage like 70% of each paycheque goes into the joint account and like you each keep 30%. So regardless of what you make your both putting in the same percentage...

I can think of a few QBN'ers that must have joint accounts... to save up for their dope.

I have a flat mate first thing we did was get a joint account we pay the same into it each month no problem. If you have a doubt then I think there is a selfish nature and a trust problem which lives inside you albeit small it does exist.

hell no to joint accounts. The bills are split accordingly and the responsibilities are set. haven't had any problems yet.

For sure - joint accounts, like everything else in a relationship, require communication. If your relationship is fine (i.e., you're able to communicate with your significant other), then there are definite benefits to joint checking accounts.
BTW, if you're worried about what happens if/when you get divorced, if you're in a community property state like California, whether your moneys are in two accounts or one, it's all going to be split right down the middle anyway. Separate checking accounts won't protect you from all-mighty divorce laws.
(just don't get married)

Depends on the people. My wife and I have the same approach to spending and savings so joint is the most efficient way for us to operate.

I had combined my accounts with my ex-wife when we were married. I now don't trust women, so I guess I would never do it again.

Prefer separate if I could. Joint isn't working out as my wife finds new and ingenious ways to hide spending from me.
Best way is to each have seperate accounts but have a joint account for bills.

We have an equal amount going into one account which is where all the direct debits go from. It's crazy not to do it.

joint accounts...best decision ever. but we talk about everything, decide on everything together. unless you're tight like that, it can be a problem.

believe me it would benefit me if we had joint accounts. I'm just thinking it has worked fine so far why change it.
We mostly use a joint credit card for big purchases then just split the monthly bill at the end of the month.

If you have separate accounts, It would seem like a pain the ass to collect money for the extra things like who pays the kids medical bills, and what if you wreck your car and our strapped for cash, do you take a loan from the other? and what if your spouse stays home with the kids or only works part-time?

The only draw back I can see is the amount of service charges and network charges you will have. The bank will always try to get as many services charges as possible from you. If you each have an account plus a joint account you will be paying these fees 3 times over, not to mention if you have a joint savings account.
The less you deal with the bank the more money overall you will make.

it seems naive and altruistic to combine bank accounts.
how hard is it really to have separate accounts?

a friend at work always makes fun of me for having separate accounts. He says we aren't truly married and that we have trust issues.
But then again this guy is always calling up and bitching out his wife for spending so much that he's bouncing checks.

My wife and I have a joint current/checking and savings account — from before we got married. We don't pool our wages, but we put a lump sum of money each month to pay bills etc and lump sum for savings.

separate accounts + joint account that we both contribute to and never touch

we've been pretty good so far. As it is set up now I don't get mad at her when she buys $200 boots and $100 jeans and she doesn't care when I get new snowboard gear every year.
If we had a joint account we might be more frugal with our spending so we didn't piss each other off by buying these we don't necessarily need.

We have one combined account for rent, insurance, etc...and she has her own accounts and I mine. We don't have to be completely in each others business...
