my experience with godaddy, average took 12 hours for nameservers to kick in. the fastest i've had with 30 mins. hit/miss

this isnt for a portfolio site. i am thinking i want to setup www.getthehelloutofchicago.com, so i can sell all my stuff on the site. leaving chicago in 10 days.

It depends both on your host's DNS server and well as your service provider's. Customer's on ATT for example might see your site sooner than a Cox customer if ATT refreshes their DNS sooner. Some do it every 4 hours... some every 24 hours.
The rule of thumb is to expect 24-48 hours. 48 for the little ISPs out there.

i use powerpipe.com ***always***... domain name registration to dns activation is almost always within 15 minutes, usually less.
