Everywhere you look, you see stuff that is ugly. We as graphic designers struggle to make things look clean and refined and beautiful. But what if the opposite is true, that loud, ugly design is actually the most effective? Does that mean we are fighting a losing battle?

I think you got your initial assumption wrong, it´s not about making things beautiful, it´s about communicating things, on many levels not just aesthetically.

Pretty things are easy on the eye and easily forgotten, ugly things are abrasive and are etched into the back of your mind

Museums are clean, minimal, perhaps even beautiful. The items inside, however, are often anything but..
Beauty - or that look designers often refer to as such - is not an end unto itself. For those outside of our little aesthetically driven world, that idea of beauty is often met with "so what?".
You can probably make an argument for or against the Google logo here on QBN. But beyond this place (and like places, and of course, Google) you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who really cares.
Many designers are in the business of creating things for other designers. Hoping to put out something that will garner praise from their brethren. The problem is... sometimes the client really wants a logo that reminds them of the circus (what the Google logo makes me think of). It brings them joy.
There is a fine line between Informed Guidance and Arrogance. If "ugly" puts a smile on your client's face and pays your rent, then sometimes it is better.- I never saw the google logo that way... I'm not sure if I can unsee it that way nowkalkal

Ugly isnt always better. My friends GF is walking around at 200lbs. Bitches at everything he does, refuses him sex. She has an annoying voice, and is obssesive compulsive about putting things back. Even if you are still using it.
Designs now a days are getting crappier too. That whole skull/ herald crest/ day of the dead/ eagle wing genre made things a little worse too.
I cant lie I got caught up in it too, cant lie...but lets change it.- you're really talking about your girlfriend, aren't you?monospaced

I don't think it's necessarily ugly.. you're missing the point. There's more to something successful than design. eg: Google might look 'ugly' but the idea and execution are quality. So no-one really cares.
werd.

Beauty and Ugliness are both subjective.
What you may think its ugly, other people find stunning, they will consume that product, you wont. Why?
the product you consider to have a non attractive design never had the intention to seduce you in the first place. You are not going to wear an ed hardy t shirt or have your girlfriend/ wife or daughter wear a pair of pants that say Juicy across her butt. But some people consider that to be great and original design.
Simple as that.
Its all a matter of perception.
