It is a decent sum of money (thousands not hundreds), they are just being a pain in the ass.

go paint the word "REDRUM" with pig's blood in their windows.
Works everytime for me.

you didn't answer anyone though. did you have a contract? first, and formeost, the most important part to get any type of useful info here.
- No formal contract. We have done work together in the past so we only emailed.

No... they are more than a pain in your ass... if it's happening to you, it's probably happening to a lot of their suppliers. You need to get your lawyer involved post haste so you are higher up the queue

Lawyer, get one. I know in LA there are some get togethers between lawyers and creatives where you pay a nominal fee and you get to sit down with a lawyer for 20 min or so.
I hate chasing money, really do. I had a client do a medium sized job (for me) and it took them 30+ days past due. Was about to turn off the site when the check came in. BUT, they then asked me for more work and I turned it down for that one reason. Stupid? Maybe, but it's better than stressing for lost wages.

pull the plug on the site.

bad debtors who come back in for repeat work pay up front or not at all!
i dunno how it works stateside, but if you can prove (by email or otherwise) that so and so has agreed for you to undertake work at above price etc, then it's binding. most of the time threat of action is enough, tho we've used collection agencies rather than small claims even for jobs for 500 ish, they tag their fees ontop so we get money in full, it's better than waving goodbye.

I used to load a blank swf on a higher layer from a remote server... so that if trouble arose, I could change it to cover up the site

Their should be a graphic design mafia, so when you do work for someone and they don't pay you, you wack their ass or cut off their clicker finger.
