Never owned a CC card in my life thus far, never needed one.
But a couple months ago, Macy's offered me too much of a discount to pass up by signing up for one of their cards. Like 40%. So I did. 3 weeks later, I get a rejection letter in the mail saying I don't have enough credit for a credit card. Oh well.
But I've done this 3-4 times since and keep saving money, but never end up getting a card approved afterwards.
Is this uh... going to keep happening forever?

If the economy ever improves you'll be able to get all the credit cards you want. I was offered and given one at the age of 18 with zero credit history. Didn't turn out well.

You need a cc to get credit. Start with small amount use it to pay bill, collect points and build credit

go to your bank and get a legit credit card, don't get a store card, those are rarely worth it.
your bank can set up a credit card and use it as an overdraft acct, i.e. if you have $400 in your account and you write a $500 check, instead of bouncing $100 of it'll go onto that card. Even with no credit if you have a bank account you can set one up with a small limit, a few hundred dollars, and within a year you can raise the limit.
Also there's nothing wrong with not having a credit card. if you can avoid them you should. I only use it for overdraft backup and for large business expenses to rack up skymiles, etc.

Credit card card?

you can build credit by maintaining a positive balance on your checking account. DO NOT continue to sign up for cards because creditors check that kind of thing when you apply, and it does not look good that you have applied for some many cards without success.

You may need a credit card if only to make your FICO score better. The ratio of credit used to credit available is a major factor. Try and limit the number of cards you have. Always pay on time or earlier and keep the credit balance as low as possible.

No, I mean.. I know I could get a card from my bank if I reaaaaaaally wanted.. but I truly have no need for one at the moment.
I'm much more interested in the fact that I keep saving 30% of my money every time I make large purchases just by filling those suckers out at stores. ;)

i never understood the need for credit. the past 5 years i lived only on what's in my bank account and i couldn't be happier.

Credit cards, and easy credit is what caused the current economic meltdown— if you get one, always pay off your balance each month or you ARE a schmuck.

that is awesome. I have not had a credit card in 8 years. If i cant pay cash then i don't buy it...but next exactly.. The only debt I have is my car and student loan.

kult, when you apply for a credit card and get rejected it lowers your credit rating 40pts on every attempt.

You should at least try to get credit. it will only help you if you are responsible with it.
Employers are starting to look at credit history in hiring new employees and it could potentially get you out of a bind (needing a car in a new city) or if you get married and want to buy a house.just dont be out of hand with it. - although cc companies probably wont let you get too crazy from here on out. Youll be getting phone calls the minute after your late on a payment.

I think people's attitudes toward credit are going to be much different once all of this shakes out. That house/car/whatever becomes a huge weight around your neck when times get tough... you can see it already, and it's only going to get worse. Especially people who go for the mortgage modification on subprimes/alt-a, those people are getting f*cked all over again.
