go to your bank and get a legit credit card, don't get a store card, those are rarely worth it.
your bank can set up a credit card and use it as an overdraft acct, i.e. if you have $400 in your account and you write a $500 check, instead of bouncing $100 of it'll go onto that card. Even with no credit if you have a bank account you can set one up with a small limit, a few hundred dollars, and within a year you can raise the limit.
Also there's nothing wrong with not having a credit card. if you can avoid them you should. I only use it for overdraft backup and for large business expenses to rack up skymiles, etc.
