I have seen a trend lately ... people think the economy is going to collapse and they are going to be best prepared as farmers ..
this completely baffles me .. here was my response to an email ...
don't be frighted by all the doomsdayer ... every decade there is a doomsday about something ... we all think we are super special and we just happened to be born in the century when the world ended .. trust me ... I will keep this email and send it to you in 10 years and you will probably be chilling comfortably.. this has been going on since the dawn of time ... statically you are more likely to die in a car accident then anything else .. so I think the best way to live is enjoy life, enjoy the people around you, eat good food, have good sex and don't fear the concept of hell until it is here .. don't let the fear of the future rob the present .. even if everything did collapse .. which I think there is more of a chance that elvis will come back to life as a breakdancer .. farmers will be just as screwed .... no one is an island these days .. we are all connected .. say if farmers did have the best plan ... there would be a million hungry people with guns that would rob the shit out of the farmers in a heartbeat .. but if you want to live off the land .. I recommend moving to costa rica .. you don't even have to farm .. you can live as a hunter gatherer .. you walk out side your house and there are banana trees, mango, monkeys to hunt and you can fish in the sea .. plus its beautiful and you can surf .. I lived there for 6 months .. it's amazing

it was my first reaction as well. always thought about falling back on growing something. never done it before it just seems like the reasonable thing to do?

I haven't heard anyone talk about becoming a farmer, but I have heard of a revival of 'victory gardens' and buying more from local farmers. It's cheaper, healthier, better for the environment, a good skill to know and pass on, and I know it sounds crazy... but a lot of people actually enjoy growing their own food.
Or you can go to KFC. Whatever floats your boat.

I think growing your food is awesome ... its just the idea that of world collapsing=farming trips me out

actually, only 44.3% of the 4.4% of people whose death was caused by an accident of any type, have died in a car crash. You're mostly likely to die of heart disease or old age, and if its heart disease, you're most likely very old anyway.
We're the safest, richest, healthiest, tallest, best educated, best equipped and most mobile people who have ever lived on this planet. Even the poor in the developing world are significantly better off than they were 20 years ago.
chill out folks, you've never had it so good.

a good letter to time out this week:
Dear Londoners:
Please stop complaining. Yes, the economy is going belly up and Boris is in charge, but despite what some in the media would have you believe, you will not get knifed by an unknown assailant this year. (In 2008 only around 100 people were killed in stabbings out of a population of 7.3 million.)You will not lose your house to the banks (there are 18 million homes in the UK according to national statistics and reposessions for 2008 are estimated at 45,000).
Most kids have something to say if you listen.
The vast majority of you will still have some kind of job... oh, you get the idea. Please, please stop whining. Life is great, and on top of that you live in one of the best cities in the world. Enjoy it. Have a Happy New Year.

I've been reading a really good book called Risk, about why we're all so scared constantly despite being better off than we ever have. Obviously it talks a great deal about the media and politicians and how they manipulate data to push agendas, and how insignificant event get drawn into ongoing narratives and accumulate into HUGE ISSUES that we're all to be terrified about. They play with your flight or flight instincts and you don't even know it.
So turn off you TV, stop reading the news so much and question every statistic you hear because up to 90% of them are bogus, or framed in such a way as to scare you. Including that one.

(ironically though, it talks about manipulation of crime statistics, and how safe we mostly are. Then I took the book to the pub before I;d finished it and someone nicked it while I was out having a ciggie.
This country's going to the dogs, I tell you)

Time-lined link (certainly), but fitting this topic rather smashingly never the less...
