Art directors deal with the day to day runnings of the creative team. CDs deal with the clients. Designers design.

our agency really doesn't have an Art Director. We have a guy with a Creative Director title, but really everyone here is Sr. level. I've held the Senior Designer title for the past 8 yrs or so... but my role has really always been different. These days, I do mostly motion and flash direction and design... but who cares what my title says? I really don't... especially when working at a smaller firm. I can see titles coming into play a little more at a large organization.

Look here is an ex collegue of mine.
He is actually an art worker, he just does the prepress ( very badly i might ad). But still he calls himself an art director.
Actually all the stuff in that portfolio is not his, there is even stuff from me in. He just did some pre-press.

I thought Art Direction means you have designers that you delegate a look & feel to, as well as the over-arching theme and they will carry it through the rest of the design bits. I feel like I do a lot of that, as well as a lot of comping. Just depends on the availability of the designers.

I have found that since being an art director and now senior art director that I get to do more conceptual work then I did as a senor designer.
Other then that the roles do not vary greatly personaly

My ex-business partner used to call himself an art director and it always made me cringe and want to berate him. Most of the time he was sat at his desk reformatting American generated artwork for English production. Occasionally he would be co-ordinating a shoot for a record sleeve and at that point I would feel a bit more charitable about the descriptor.
But then we'd be on the shoot, and I'd be up with the photographer working out the shots, and he'd be sat right at the back eating the sausage rolls with his moped helmet on, waiting for his mobile phone to ring so he had excuse to leave everyone to it.
Then I used to think "Art director my arse".
He was/is a really good production designer and typographer, He really should just be proud of that and call himself a designer.

its only a title where i work, we have senior level designers, and junior, thats basically it.

I don't have a card

Im a Senior Designer for a few reasons:
1. I've been designing for 10 years
2. I've been here the longest of all the designers
3. I work on projects & manage them from the start to finish
4. I oversee other designers working on my projectsOne thing I hate though is that everyone seems to give themselves the whatever/ art director title
- And I dont have a card eitherimnotadesigner

Art Directors work with Copywriters and a team of designers to create concepts and direct those under the vision of the Creative Director
Senior Designers are apart of the team Art Directors manage. They primarily are involved only in the design process.
This is generally how the traditional structure works. It seems many jr. designers will falsely call themselves whatever they want in order to obtain work or respect without really understanding what their title means.
- Thats why I just tell people Im a "designer" not a senior, art director, junior, or anything elseimnotadesigner

But what do you call yourself when you're a creative director, art director and senior designer all rolled into one?

I wish I was an Art Director, maybe some of the shit that gets put out there on the streets from my company i could of stopped/influence! But hey, like most of you have said, titles are just that...titles! Means diddly sqwat if you ask me, as every folio I see nowadays says "I AM AN ART DIRECTOR" and I think to myself, your a fu**ing joke!
- janne760
fuck titles. just do your work.

The only difference is the pay. There are 4 ADs here and 3 SDs. In my opinion two of the Senior Designers are far superior designers to all but one of the Art Directors. Where I think the difference is is how they interact with clients and project managers, how they handle and run with a project and how the ADs can pick up and run with any aspect of the project if and when needed.
- so that would make them better art directors then, and more worthy of that title?kelpie

1. Yes

I have cd on my card, and the reason why is because I do everything, from music / sound design, print, web, dvd, live video for concerts/ events, etc.
I felt like graphic designer was too small to show all that, (creative direction might be too vague though, since people outside design dont know what it means, and a lot of web designers use it as well)
so until I figure something I like better, then that would do..
I'm open to suggestions though.
