bought a refurbed macbook about 2 months ago... used the 'left over' cash and bumped the ram... still was under 200 bux from the normal price with all the ram I can handle... and the same warranty - seems like a no brainer

Kerus:
Look up on the apple site, they released a note regarding a default logic board on the mbp, I printed the page, took it to the store and after an intense battle w their horrible, horrible customer care, I got a new machine. Even if your apple care expired or you have no warranty apple will repair it for free or refound your money if you already paid.

Luckily AppleCare is covering it all so it can then go straight to craigslist. FTDS

would absolutely love a macbook pro. However anything les than 15" screen is useless to me, so even in the refurb store I'm looking at 14 hundred pounds. wtf?

A chap I work with bought a refurb. It was dented and stopped working after a couple of weeks. He sent it back and got a replacement refurb. The superdrive no longer works so he's had to send back the second one too. He got applecare but after the run of crap refurbs he got I'd stick with a new one.

I got a refurb mb pro recently. It was flawless. Sold it, got a tad faster one. This one shows tiny signs of use, has a hot pixel or two and the fan is noisy when it gets on higher speeds.
Ian, where do you go to service a mac? I hear mactivate turned to shit. They took my friends' macbook with tea spillage problem, kept it for two weeks before opening (OK, it was Xmas - NewYear's and they didn't work but it developed rust inside) and told him logic board needed to be replaced at the price of a new computer.
When he analyzed the machine himself, it turned out only keyboard needed a replacement.

Mactivate are shit, similar story with my friends ipod, they kept it in the shop till the warranty ran out then told her it would cost pretty much the same as a new ipod to fix. Fucking cowboys.
Typetec used to do repairs (got my pb fixed there when the screen died) but I don't think they fix for the general public any more just people who've bought from them. Though again, both my gf and my pbs screens died (within days of each other, though mine was about 1 yr older) left them in with them, replaced logic board, did nothing, disconnected my airport had to leave it back in with them, took weeks to sort.
Though they were better than mactivate. http://www.typetec.ie/dynamicdat…
I might be able to dig up some numbers for repair guys though, if you're having trouble with yours.

I've got a macbook with applecare that I want to sell, only it developed strange white spots on the screen. I thought I'd get that fixed first.
I actually used mactivate some 2-3 years ago and they sent me a courier within warranty. Now they say I can either drop in or they can courier it for me for €30. Bastards!Typetec, mactivate and dectek are listed as repair centres on apple's website. I'll give typetec a try then.
