Is it true that the refurbs are just as good as the new ones? I am thinking of saving some bucks and going this route.

this is true

Writing this on a refurb PowerBook G4. Still working fine. Saved me 50%.

not entirely.
there is higher chances that a refurb mac is better than a new one actually.
Some of these computers where opened by someone that bought it brand new, and realized that there was a defective part and sent it back right away.
Apple fixes the mistake and puts it back to selling standards (that includes it being eligible for apple care) and then who ever buys it as a refurb machine, won't have to send it back for repair, cause it has already been tested by someone else.

They are even better, no dead pixels on screen and so on. You can't change the spec during buying process and you get it as it is.

i have had a ton of problems with my MBP refurb.
had to have the fans replace, video card replace, HD replaced, and still need a problem with the LCD fixed.. sighall refurbs get sent out to cali for repairs no matter what
if you buy new they will swap your machine in the store
i will never buy another refurb.- That's shitty. You're only the third person I've ever heard have a problem with refurbs,Jnr_Madison
- I'm guessing it's a first gen MBP? If so, that's the problem. Never buy 1st gen Apple products.dMullins
- very, very strange and unlucky case. Just bad luck, there is still way more problems with brand new unitsMeeklo

Just got one, we'll have to figure out if it's mine or the missus'. She's the one who uses 3D modeling for interior design and "needs" the video board it has :|
It's the last of the matte series. I'm still waiting to open the box until I get home..

had a 3. a mini, rocked, had another mini at work same, now a blk MB and its like when you buy a used car, its not brand new from a dealer, but you fall in love with it and you think its RULE!!!
i still have to ry to get get the apple care, as a in -case, typew thing happen. but its fater and performing better then my office PC: 3.Ghz core 2 duo, 3.25 RAM sytem
only thing w/ my MB, thats a slight bummer is when I hook it up to my dell 20" screen. the DVI hook up isn't as clear as I hoped. or was with the Mini's. :/

Refurb macs have been selling for how many years now and people STILL have to create threads asking is it worth it and/or safe?

Just opened it.. it's the latest Intel Penryn series, with 8GB ram upgradeability and touch gestures trackpad thingy. A flawless matte screen.. yummy! Should last me until this dumbifying gloss fad is over and out of fashion. As much as I didn't like this powerbook keyboard, I love it now that I started typing this.
What in the world made me say to the missus it was hers?!

my MBP went out yet again for another new logic board / hd / video card combo. the fans had stopped kicking on again and it fried the machine again. good times...
