Ok. My foutyisms may not be done yet, but what I am trying to do is have no gaps in my shadow. Thanks for not berating me yet.

Try 2 divs around the middle content area. The outer div has a background png of the drop shadow that goes all the way across (contains both left and right shadows). The inner div is narrower than the outer div and centered. The inner div will force the height of the outer div and with the background tiling on the outer div will adjust to the dynamic height of the inner div.
That should do it. Hopefully that makes sense =D
- this is how i usually do it, inner with fixed width and outer with padding and bgacescence

jay, use a three column layout with a header and a footer. Set a backgroundimage (shadow left / right) for the side-columns with a vertical repeat. Then no matter how long or short your content is, it will stretch/shrink to the appropiate size.

pure scripted dropshadows are possible as well, be it a somewhat heavier load
