  Try 2 divs around the middle content area. The outer div has a background png of the drop shadow that goes all the way across (contains both left and right shadows). The inner div is narrower than the outer div and centered. The inner div will force the height of the outer div and with the background tiling on the outer div will adjust to the dynamic height of the inner div.

  That should do it. Hopefully that makes sense =D
