Anyone using alternatives to sIFR for the web typography?
Came across a couple of alternatives:

http://css-tricks.com/typefacejs…Let me know if you've tried em.
Cheers

yes actually on my new portfolio; I'm using typeface.js and also figured out how to put it into a wordpress layout for post titles.
Oddly enough to get it to work in wordpress, you have to put a div INSIDE the link tag. Bizarre.
- yeah, looking at typeface, the one major problem from an SEO point of view is that H tags can't be used, has to be divs and spansleewilson78
- only using mine for headings so not too worried about seo.mg33

used to use sifr. Definitely a good thing.
But lately I went to for less painful javascript free tecnique (for headlines at least):
1) I do the gif of the piece i need.
2) I use it as a bg image for the tag i need
3) i set the indent as -6000px so the html text isn't visible. But if i had to use custom type for dynamic sites I'd use sifr.
- I've done that also, but impossible if the client needs to update via a CMS,leewilson78

it sucks that with typeface.js you can't create certain fonts that have embed protection with their font conversion tool.
- yeah, not tried it with my fonts, probably will be an issue.leewilson78

I did implement sIFR, but the network that the client is on has disabled flash, so need to use an alternative, or sacrifice the type

font converter on the typeface.js website doesn't work, guess that rules that out.

ttf font protection is just a single bit that is pretty easy to flip:

of course, that would probably be a violation of the license and illegal.

I think it's ridiculous that we even have to have this conversation, in that if we had thought 15 years ago we'd be discussing hacks to get decent typography onto people screens, we'd have laughed at ourselves, whilst going gaga over our cellphones....Good typography sells shit, bottom line - for some reason, the road to getting cutting edge glyphs painlessly in front of consumers has fallen somewhere between accessibility and clients that 'won't install flash'. Help, clever people with the money, help !///

All of these are great, but none are viable for any real commercial site. Way too fucking buggy.

I can't get sIFR to work with links. Anyone have an example/demo?

I agree, it's crazy we have to rely on hacks to get decent typography, I heard about two possible technologies for the future.. (god knows when it will be okay to use them, though)
The first is a microsoft-originated technology called EOT (embedded open type), which locks down a true-type or open-type font file (so it can be used with out the owner of the font IP getting their knickers in a twist). Sounds okay in theory, but it's a prohibitive technology, and acts a bit like DRM for fonts (and personally I think DRM is something the devil cooked up).
The second simply allows the font-file to be published unencrypted, which the font-companies understandably don't like.. makes use of the '@font-face' construct.
Re. sIFR - I like this technology, but if you use it.. please _don't_ rely on background transparency, because there a few platforms out there that can't render transparent flash; and the result is your work will look shit. I've attached a shot of the pizza-express site linked above.. see those while rectangles? yuck.
