Is there any way in illy to convert a rectangle shape to stroke?

Shift+X creates a stroke on the outer perimeter of the shape.
I think he was looking for a way to have the actual shape converted into a stroke (with the stroke weight being the entire 'former' shape).
I don't have an answer for this, but just trying to clarify.

after that if you want to convert the stroke to fill > expand

that image is what i need... the black stroke is a typeface -> outline -> add stroke... but what I need is the red line you see in the center of the shape.. so, when I add more weight, you get something like the left pic (red d)

MikeJ, the short answer is: No.
Luckily, it looks like it would only take a few minutes to achieve the look you need. Just start clicking with the pen.
