Something like this or similar would be excellent. Toshiba makes superb laptops, and having a dedicated video card is highly recommended for any media/graphics work. Keep in mind that when you look for a laptop with excellent battery life, you will lose performance. Having said that, I couldn't find battery life on this one.

Here's another....Asus is also a really solid and well known brand among pc enthusiasts.

Just wanted to point out that i had a Toshiba laptop that never worked. For 2 years the cd drive never worked and the computer would also shut down for no reason. Motherboard and a bunch of shit had to be replaced several times. The laptop made 8 trips to their repair depot and never worked.
It did not matter how much I asked for a brand new computer, a replacement for a defective product out of the box. They never proceded to do this replacement.Worst costumer care/warranty.
They lied several times and all i could do was file complaints at 3 different Better Business Bureau offices.
Will never deal with Toshiba ever again in my life.
- mine was one of those Satellite laptops.VectorMasked
- interesting. You probably got a "lemon" I know it happens with laptops too. Some just have flaws.designbot

Keep something else in mind. As far as MBP's go, you are paying a premium price for aesthetics and the Apple name. Apple doesn't actually manufacture any hardware. That is to say, that as far as hardware goes, you will be paying more for less with a Mac. If you were to buy one, it should be purely based on the fact that you want OSX as your operating system and/or like the Apple aesthetics.

Sony do good lappies. Not cheap, but they're well built and usually well-specced.

you can get a Dell that blows any mac out of the water for 800 bucks less

I own a Toshiba A300 (way under your budget) running Vista 64bit and it's great. Great keyboard, great battery life compared to others in it's range and looks good. Not all Toshiba's are lemons.

With that money you might also want to consider last seasons MBP specced up to the max. You'll get FW400 and a matte screen.
