Hello again.
I am moving into a new studio end of next week and BT are coming to hook up my Boradband and phone account. They have offered me a BT modem/router/box whatever it is. I want to have a wireless set up in the studio.
I am a technical retard, so I was wondering... do I need a modem AND a wireless router, or do I just need to buy a wireless router and that does the modemmy stuff too?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated by a swift and gentle cupping of the miracle.

You need the modem and the router.

Tell bt you want a wireless network and they'll give you the kit you need...

The BT box they supply should enable you to do all that you want.
That said, I've heard it's a pile of shit, so you may wish to opt for another all in one box from a reputable manufacturer like Netgear or Linksys. If you have a techie friend, they might be able to set you up with one of the newer Wireless tech standards ('N') which are quicker and have a longer range.

Its just that at home we have our NTL modem box thingy, and then we have a Netgear wireless router. Its always been like that, and then at the weekend some visitors came (volunteers from Help The Weak Minded Charity Org) and they looked a bit perplexed and said "Hmm, I don't think you need both of those... the Netgear wirelss router is also the Modem".
And for the first time in my life, I found myself hopelessly lost in a tumultuous sea of technology.
- I lied, I spend every day lost on that particular sea.Horp
- In that case, your existing do-it-all Netgear box will likely suffice. Setting it up with new details might be a pain 4 u thoNairn
- Oh I think I'd just buy another one. We need that one at home to perform homely broadband duties.Horp
- We're all whelming in a 4D ocean of radiological perturbationNairn

What studio space did you get in the end?

Hello mate, didn't think you were still around. I found a proper artist's studio in an Arts Council funded new development. Its a 30 second walk from my house. Its a converted 18th century ice house on Shoreham Port in Portslade. Not sure if you ever go along that road (the road to Shoreham). It looks like a single storey building from the road but it drops down the little cliff face to the portside.
I'm moving in next week. Cannot wait.
- isn't that kind of inconvenient, having to walk for 30 seconds?hallelujah
- Yeah i go the seafront road twice every day! Trying to figure out where you man. Not the place that Blasttheory use is it?MSL
