Freelance no-more

I just recently went on staff after being freelance for over 5 years. Finally went to the dentist and I'm looking forward to some paid vacations. My main reason was to opt for some security during the upcoming shit-storm in publishing and advertising. At least now if I get laid off I'll get some unemployment insurance.
Anyone else thinking the same?

two polar opposite and completely valid points of view.
either one works?

I don't know how to reconcile these views. This thread is useless to me.

I just took a staff position at an agency, and I couldn't be happier not having to worry about where my next paycheck is coming from. I just couldn't handle the worrying anymore...

I'm a commercial photographer and over the last few months advertising budgets have dropped significantly. Meaning fewer jobs are being handed out to fewer shooters. Magazines are folding all over the place so the editorial jobs are becoming scarce too. The studio I took a full time position with has some strong relationships with the bigger retailers in the country (and the US), so I'm hoping that these clients will weather the storm and I can just ride it out on their back.
Keep in mind that there are far more design positions available than photographers, so I consider myself luck to be able to pay the bills at this point.

I'm in print mainly and the freelance work has definitely dropped off significantly, I can't wait to find an agency job so I won't have to worry about how I'm going to pay the rent!

I've been back in the UK for 5 months after 2 years in full time employment in Ireland. I've been freelancing since I got back and work has got scarcer and scarcer. Things seem to be pickin up now slightly, but I am freelancing some where that has me on a bit of a trial and with that in mind I am working towards getting a position if the opportunity is there.
When I got this place I was just walking out of my door to go and see what my benefit options were and what work the local bars needed. I'm not up for doing that again!

Yeah, I think we'll all have time to read all the manuals the next couple of years.

I am also considering the same move...i have a family now and insurance is a must. We can't get insurance on our own so my wife is working for it and with twins there is a lot of juggling.
I also don’t know after 5 years of freelancing how dealing with a chain of command would go over. argh.

i hate my current job but i'm thinking of just riding out the torture and low pain until the economt gets better.

interesting. I'm actually thinking of going the freelance route right now. hate my job and my freelance work has increased like fuckin crazy. I'm easily doing 80 hours a week between the two. The thought of quitting a steady check to pursue a better career situation is frightening with 3 kids at home, but wifey's a school teacher so at least the insurance side is taken care of. I look at it like this: I'm 6 years away from being a 40 year old designer... point me to the career graveyard now please.

Gets scarier as time goes on. It makes those full time jobs look more attractive. Also in Canada it's really tough to get a mortgage if you're self employed.
- which is key for me, because as soon as the real estate market dumps I'm gonna buy a place.Tungsten
- On the contrary - i've only been freelancing for 2 years now, and we just purchased a house on only my income... you just have to talk to the right broker.neferiu
