Is graphic design art?

You know it's not a requirement of our profession to know the answer to this question . . . you aren't a bad designer if you can't tell the difference . . . and I mean the actual difference, not the who/what/where, between design and art. You certainly "design" a piece of art, and you certainly utilize artistic methods when designing a piece of junk mail. You could see a beautiful poster with words on it that you don't recognize, so it's art to you. But it's in french, and it's actually a poster for a local french band. So it's really design. The only difference is context, and whether or not you believe it's possible to create art unintentionally. If you know the answer to that last point I'd really like to hear it.

design is not "problem solving" dude, maybe it should be, but right now there are like five solutions.
So you're fucking sorta WRONG! Now lets keep arguing.

art is made by an artist. he or she does what ever they want. lets paint pink teddy bears.
designer does what the client needs. totally difference.

what if the artist has a sponsor, patron or whatever? Sponsor may not support pink teddy bears.

Black and white definitions are – as clear and beautifully comprehensible as they are – a need of the past. Take our president elect as an example.

can you hang graphic design up-side down?

Absolutely not.
Graphic Art is Art. Graphic Design is an Industry.Think it's very important to draw this divide — by all means 'Art' can be incorporated into Design, but the minute a project fails to work to a brief, facilitating a need for a client, it's up for grabs. However, in my opinion it's no longer Graphic Design.

"We’re not here to give them what’s safe and expedient. We’re not here to help eradicate everything of visual interest from the face of the earth. We’re here to make them think about design that’s dangerous and unpredictable. We’re here to inject art into commerce.”

"After 15 or 20 years I discovered that design is just language and the real issue is what you use that language to do. Now I’m at a point where I’m tired of talking about what kind of accents to use. I want to talk about the words that are being said."

Graphic design at it's best is about communication and function, art at it's best is about communicating disfunction...
