Trying to find the perfect balance between Usability vs. Features vs. Aesthetics.
What are some things you love/hate about Photogalleries and browsing photos online?
Do you prefer having a row of thumbnails to have an overview of work? Or do you think thumbs just clutter things up?

i am against thumbnails unless they don't draw attention away from the actual photographs
also photographs should be show as big as possible, while leaving enough blank space around them

Building mine, I decided to avoid thumbnails. Don't know if I am the average user, but I prefer a slideshow with big, high-quality images to a list of thumbnails.

I like thumbnails that enlarge when I rollover them...

the perfect gallery is always the one showing great photographs though.... if the photos suck, the gallery doesn't make a difference

I like thumbnails because it allows you to get an overview of the entire body of work. For me, seeing a collection of photographs together and how they relate to each other is an important part of the experience.

square thumbnails in a second column with main photo on the right. With some nice jquery cycling to fade the images, integrated with either Flickr or a CMS of your choice/

I have thumbnails appear as large images load in background; since large images appear upon thumbnail rollover, thumbnails are a pure navigational device; they can be quite small as there is instant feedback on what the thumbnail represents
- why have the extra layer of deciding/clicking?hallelujah

Good question.
What I want is a combination of simple viewer and lightbox. Has anyone seen any examples like that?
I tweaked the layout of simple viewer quite a bit on my photo galleries, saved it as a template, and just drop it into place when I'm doing a new one.
For example: http://www.mg33.net/photos/lolla…

To another point about that above - I like using lightbox for simple sets of images, but it would be a pain to do a full gallery, having to add so much code by hand for individual images.

Do you all prefer Flash, XHTML or both?
